Carroll Varsity Roundup: Schene, Shipley lead Mavs to tourney title

Manchester Valley’s boys basketball team trailed by one point with less than 20 seconds remaining when Bo Schene drained a 3-pointer to give it the lead. Justin Shipley’s block at the other end secured a 54-42 victory over Hereford and the Mavs won their own holiday tournament Thursday night in Manchester.

Schene had 18 points for the Mavericks (2-7), while Shipley and Dayne Koontz each scored 11. Shipley and Schene earned all-tourney honors, and Schene was the event’s MVP.

Man Valley lost to Hereford by 19 points on Dec. 13.

Event: Liberty Holiday Tournament

Recap: At Eldersburg, Andrew Warehime sent the game into overtime, did it again to force the second OT, then hit the game-winning shot with eight seconds to play to give the Cavaliers (3-4) a win in the Freedom Division consolation game. Dylan Graham had 18 points and Cody Parks scored 14. Kollin Pavlik led SC (3-4) with 22 points, and Warehime finished with 11. Matthew Gamble scored 10 to give the Cavs five players in double figures.

Recap: At Ellicott City, Amir Cole scored 26 points, Noah Vipond netted 25, and Anthony Murray grabbed 11 rebounds for the Eagles (4-3), who won the tournament’s consolation game.

Event: Meade Holiday Tournament

Recap: At Fort Meade, Drue Giles scored 24 points and had five assists, Joe Wright collected 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Shawn Blaney added 13 points and five steals for the Owls (5-3).

Marriotts Ridge 63, Century 59

Event: Liberty Holiday Tournament

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Knights fell to 6-2 despite 21 points from Carter Truby and 17 from Jared Lamb (seven rebounds). truby and Azariah Knox (seven points) were named to the Freedom Division all-tourney team.

Gerstell 61, Perry Hall 52

Event: Kane Street Classic, Patterson HS

Recap: At Baltimore, the Falcons knocked off the reigning Class 4A state champions to win the tourney title. Gerstell defeated Hammond 64-61 on Wednesday night behind 13 points from Khyle Washington and 12 from Colin Rimel.

Man Valley 41, Patterson Mill 22

Event: Man Valley Holiday Hoops Tournament

Recap: At Manchester, Josey Klingenberg had 12 points and four steals, Amelia Saunders scored 10 points, and Erin Piper grabbed 10 rebounds for the Mavs (7-1). Saunders earned all-tournament team honors.

Event: Holly & Hoops Tournament

Recap: At Towson, Bailey Mathias netted 11 points, Rachel Wright had nine, and Kennedy Cornick had eight for the Eagles (3-5).

Event: Holly & Hoops Tournament

Recap: At Towson, Riley Evans posted a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Cavaliers (4-4) in their second holiday tourney game.

Liberty 41, Chopticon 39

Recap: At Ellicott City, the Lions won their first game of the year (1-7) thanks in part to Jordan Nastos, who canned five 3-pointers and scored 18 points. Rachel Thiem added 10 points and Christine Goetz grabbed 10 rebounds.

Century 33, North Harford 27

Recap: At Fallston, Jess Diorio scored 10 points and Emily Kain netted seven points in Century’s first win of the year (1-7). Century lost to Harford Tech on Wednesday night 52-42 in its first tournament game. Kelsey Weishaar had 13 points and Diorio scored 10.

Glenelg 58, Winters Mill 31

Event: Winters Mill Holiday Tournament

Recap: At Westminster, Erin Snyder scored six points for the Falcons (5-1) in their first setback of the year.

Wrestling

Cavaliers fourth at South River Duals

Recap: At Edgewater, the Cavaliers finished fourth at 6-3, and Dakota Bowers (120) and Travis Crawford, last year’s Class 2A-1A 120-pound state champion, went 9-0.
