Francis Scott Key’s girls basketball team built a big lead over Manchester Valley in the third quarter, then held on to clip the Mavericks 44-40 to stay undefeated on the young season Friday night in Manchester.

The Eagles ran their record to 6-0 (3-0 Carroll County Athletic League) and got 12 points from Kennedy Cornick. Karla Stonesifer and Savannah Brooks added 10 apiece.


MV’s Amelia Saunders had 13 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter. Josey Klingenberg collected 14 points and eight steals as the Mavs (2-4, 1-2) trimmed a 15-point deficit down to two at 42-40 late in the game but fell just short.

Westminster 61, Century 29

Recap: At Westminster, the Owls (4-2, 2-1 CCAL) rolled behind 16 points from Jillian Pumputis and 13 from Sophia Diehl. Jess Diorio led the Knights (1-6, 0-3) with nine points and four rebounds, and Sarah Deese scored five points.

JV result: Westminster, 32-20.

Mount de Sales 55, Liberty 28

Recap: At Catonsville, Rachel Thiem led the Lions (2-4) with 14 points.

Boys Basketball

Century 55, Westminster 46 OT

Recap: At Eldersburg, Jared Lamb led the Knights (5-0, 3-0 CCAL) with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and six blocks. Matt Huber scored 15 and Carter Truby added 12. Drue Giles and Joe Wright had 14 points apiece for Westminster (3-2, 2-1).

JV result: Westminster, 44-20.

Gerstell 64, St. Mary’s 55

Recap: At Finksburg, the Falcons (6-4, 2-0 MIAA B) stayed perfect in league play thanks in part to 22 points and seven rebounds from Anthony Carpenter. Ahmad Harrison added 17 points.


Liberty 36, Hammond 35

Recap: At Columbia, pins from Ryan Ohler (113), Jacob Gaskin (138), Anthony Marsico (152), Sammy Nehme (170), and Max Ellis (195) helped the Lions improve to 3-0. Daniel Bird (126) and McClain Butler (182) each posted wins as well.
