Carroll Varsity Roundup: Cole, FSK take care of Westminster in county opener

Francis Scott Key’s boys basketball team built an early lead against Westminster on Tuesday and preserved it to beat the Owls 66-46 and win its boys basketball county opener in Uniontown.

Amir Cole led FSK (2-1, 1-0 county) with 24 points, and Noah Vipond posted a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Key led 17-11 after one quarter and never looked back.

Shawn Blaney’s 20 points paced the Owls (3-2, 1-1) and former Eagles guard Drue Giles netted 11 points.

JV result: Westminster won.

South Carroll 76, Winters Mill 65

Recap: At Westminster, the Cavaliers (2-2, 1-0 county) prevailed behind 19 points apiece from Cody Parks and Dylan Graham. Kollin Pavlik netted 16 for SC, while Terren McDonald’s 20 points paced the Falcons (1-2, 0-1). Chandler Gentzel finished with 17 points and Devin Callahan had 12.

JV result: SC, 50-45.

Freshman result: SC won.

Girls Basketball

Man Valley 51, Century 10

Recap: At Eldersburg, Mackenzie DeWees had 15 points, 14 rebounds, six steals, and six assists for the Mavericks (5-0, 1-0 county) in a rout. Amelia Saunders collected 15 points and four steals, and Josey Klingenberg added four assists and three steals. Kelsey Weishaar had three points for Century (0-5, 0-1), and Knights coach Heather Semies said Emily Kain shined on defense.

JV result: MV, 29-28 (MV-Josey Shaffer 9 points; C-Kailyn Jones 15).

Freshman result: MV, 39-20 (MV-Morgan Kresslein 9 points).

Westminster 69, Francis Scott Key 22

Recap: At Westminster, Zoe Costley led the Owls (3-0, 1-0 county) with 16 points and Sophia Diehl added 12. Bailey Mathias scored five for Key (3-2, 0-1).

JV result: Westminster, 41-21 (W-Mallory Phillips 16).

Wrestling

WM goes 2-0 in tri-meet

Recap: At Middleburg, the Falcons (9-0) beat Gerstell 76-6 and handled host Silver Oak 84-0. Troy Blessing (160), Trevor Fawley (170), and Hunter Lowe (195) each had two pins for Winters Mill. Gerstell defeated Silver Oak behind Rami Tadros, who also had two wins.
