Carroll Varsity Roundup: Kent, Liberty boys hoops open season with win over Walkersville

Liberty’s boys basketball team jumped out to a big first-quarter lead and never looked back in beating Walkersville 71-62 in the Lions’ season opener Tuesday in Eldersburg.

Tristan Kent led the way with 17 points and Jack Selby added 16. Steven Goetz and Peyton Scheufele each scored 10 for Liberty, which led 21-6 after one frame.


Kent and Scheufele had nine rebounds apiece for the Lions, who enjoyed a 39-29 halftime advantage.

JV result: Walkersville, 50-30.


Century 64, Glenelg 56

Recap: At Eldersburg, Carter Truby had 19 points and Jake Diehl scored 14 for the Knights (1-0). Truby added seven rebounds.

JV result: Glenelg, 54-42.

Francis Scott Key 88, Catoctin 84 OT

Recap: At Thurmont, the Eagles (1-0) forced overtime after trailing by 12 points late in regulation. Josh Brown (20 points) sank two big 3-pointers in the OT. Amir Cole also had 20 points, and Noah Vipond scored 18 to go with 11 rebounds.

JV result: Catoctin, 65-27.

Westminster 63, N. Hagerstown 62

Recap: At Hagerstown, Nick Henneman’s free throw with 13 seconds to play gave the Owls (1-0) a one-point lead, and they forced a defensive stop to preserve the win. Drue Giles had 19 points and four assists, and Shawn Blaney scored 13 points with five rebounds.

JV result: NH, 63-50.

Recap: At New Market, Cody Parks had 11 points and Dylan Graham netted nine for SC (0-1).
