Westminster’s football team led Salesianum at halftime, but the visiting team fell behind in the fourth quarter and lost 14-13 in Wilmington, Delaware on Friday.
The Owls fell to 6-3 thanks to a late touchdown by the Sallies (6-2), who overcame a strong defensive effort from Westminster.
The Owls held the Sals out of the end zone and got the ball back with 2:52 to go on their own 11-yard line, down by a point, but failed to extend the drive after one big run and later turned the ball over on downs. Salesianum ran out the clock deep in Westminster territory.
The Sallies took a 14-13 lead with 7:16 remaining in the fourth quarter with a rushing touchdown. Salesianum stopped Westminster on downs at its own 23 and marched 77 yards for the go-ahead score.
The Owls were ahead 13-7 at halftime and their defense led the way. Westminster returned a fumble for a touchdown, and intercepted Salesianum deep in its own territory late in the second quarter.
Westminster returns home to take on South Carroll in Week 10 next Friday.
