Carroll Varsity Roundup: MV's Goffena gets ready for county meet with win

Rubie Goffena tuned up for next week’s cross country county championship by winning a girls race Wednesday at Manchester Valley High School.

The Mavericks freshman crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 45.7 seconds.


Westminster won the team title with 26 points, with Abby Manning coming in second and Emma Herman taking third.

Man Valley totaled 33 points, with Margaret Frazier finishing fourth.

On the boys side, the Mavs put together a 1-2-3-3-5 finish for 15 points and a win over the Owls (48).

Gabe Szybalski won in 20:37 and Mason Weston was second, followed by teammates Gabe Eichler and Bryce Schilling.

Luis Rivera was Westminster’s top runner in sixth place.

Recap: At Finksburg, Rory Smist scored for the Falcons (6-6-2) and Haley Polk had the assist. Noel Talbot made nine saves.

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Knights (8-2) got a pair of goals from Alex Grasso and two assists from Evan Montgomery. Brian Wallace made seven saves.

Field Hockey

Westminster 1, Dulaney 0

Recap: At Westminster, the game went to 1-v-1s and the Owls (10-3) prevailed behind goals from Julia Rogalski and Margi DiPietro. Lauren Jenne made 16 saves.

Recap: At Middletown High School, Allie Williams and Megan Thomas each had goals for the Falcons (4-10).

Recap: At Middletown, Taylor Wolf had a goal and two assists to lead the Eagles (7-5). Makayla Black added a goal and an assist.


Winters Mill 168, South Carroll 184, Man Valley 185

Recap: At Links at Challedon, Brian Inglis led the Falcons (17-1) with a 38 and Josh Popielski added a 42. Ryan Stankewicz’s 41 paced the Cavaliers, and Logan Austin carded a 44 for the Mavs.

Century 180, Liberty 196

Recap: At River Downs, Liam Wolf led the Knights with a 37 while Justin Bartolowits paced Liberty with a 46. Kevin Houcks shot 53 but posted an official score for the first time this fall for the Lions.
