Carroll Varsity Roundup: Owls make early statement with sweep over Liberty

Westminster hosted Liberty on Thursday evening in Carroll County Athletic League volleyball action, a matchup of the top two teams in the county last season.

The Owls made a statement by sweeping the Lions 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 to improve to 4-0.


Emily Bartlett had 30 assists and Jilienne Widener totaled 21 kills for Westminster (3-0 county). Kasey Thomas had nine digs and Zoe Costley added seven kills.

Liberty is 1-2, 1-2.

JV result: Westminster, 2-0.

Century 3, South Carroll 0

Recap: At Winfield, the Knights moved to 4-0 (3-0 county) with their 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 win. Caroline Mastria and Maria Acaron had eight kills each, and Mastria added six aces. Ally Everton collected 18 digs. SC (0-4, 0-4) totaled 31 digs, with five apiece from Hailey Kirkendall and Rachel Palmer.

JV result: Westminster, 2-0.

Winters Mill 3, Man Valley 0

Recap: At Westminster, the Falcons stayed unbeaten (4-0, 3-0 county) in a 24-15, 25-13, 25-21 victory. Megan Ruff and Brynn Choplin had eight kills apiece, and Jordan Badorrek handed out 24 assists. The Mavs (0-5, 0-4) got nine digs form Carly Bell and 10 assists from Josey Klingenberg.

JV result: MV, 2-1.

Boys Soccer

Dulaney 4, Westminster 1

Recap: At Timonium, Nik Haldorsen netted an unassisted goal for the Owls (4-1), and Adam Elofir made four saves.

JV result: Westminster, 2-1.


Girls Soccer

Century 4, Francis Scott Key 0

Recap: At Eldersburg, Emily Rusk had a goal and an assist for the Knights (2-2, 1-0 county). Haley Sawyers totaled 18 saves for Key (2-2, 0-1).

JV result: Century, 13-1.

Westminster 2, Dulaney 0

Recap: At Westminster, Hannah Green and Lauren Saltz scored goals for the Owls (2-2), with assists from Rachel Moberly and Faith Chmielewski.

JV result: Westminster, 3-0.

Field Hockey

Westminster 9, Atholton 0

Recap: At Westminster, Veronica Maring scored three goals and Haleigh Moore added two goals and three assists for the Owls (3-0).

JV result: Westminster, 4-0 (Olivia Figuli two goals).

Winters Mill 4, Catoctin 0

Recap: At Thurmont, Hailey Wise had a goal and assist for the Falcons (1-2) in their first win.

Bel Air 2, South Carroll 1 (OT)

Recap: At Winfield, Grace Fipps scored in regulation but the Cavaliers (1-4) fell in the one-on-one overtime session. Fipps and Jenna McDermott converted goals in the OT.

JV result: BA, 2-0.

Century 3, Catonsville 2

Recap: At Catonsville, Grace Bruce handed out two assists and made a pair of defensive stops for the Knights (4-2), who led 3-0 at halftime. Claire Hollinger made eight saves.

JV result: Century, 4-0.


Westminster 156, Man Valley 189, FSK 250

Recap: At Westminster National, Aaron Sorkin paced the Owls (10-1) with a 35 and Jennifer Sorkin carded a 38. Justin Holmes’ 45 led the Mavericks, (5-9) while Brody Brilhart shot 54 for the Eagles (0-10).

South Carroll 171, Liberty 182

Recap: At Links at Challedon, the Cavaliers (7-5, 3-9 county) got a 34 from Ryan Stankewicz and a 41 from Nick Amateau. Justin Bartolowits finished with a 44 for the Lions (6-7, 1-2) and Andrew Glass shot 45.
