Carroll Varsity Roundup (May 24): Man Valley's Matthew Fairchild set for third-place match at state tennis tournament

Manchester Valley senior Matthew Fairchild reached the semifinals of the Class 3A boys singles state tournament Friday at Wilde Lake Tennis Club in Columbia before suffering his first loss of the year.

Fairchild (20-1) fell in straight sets against Mount Hebron’s Michael Kimack, 6-4, 6-2, but he’s set to play in the consolation final Saturday. Fairchild got to the semifinals by outlasting Romain Gross of City in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5).

Fairchild will be joined Saturday by Liberty’s girls doubles team of Emily Brecker and Noelle Htwar, who reached the 2A state finals with two wins Thursday.

Owls’ Parry set for Big 33 game

Westminster defensive lineman Joe Parry is on Team Maryland, which is slated to face Team Pennsylvania in the annual Big 33 Game on Monday at 2 p.m at Landis Field in Harrisburg, Pa.

Parry is a 6-foot-3, 240-pound lineman who is committed to play college football at Shepherd University. He totaled 51 tackles last fall and helped Westminster play in the Class 3A West championship game, en route to earning Times first-team all-county honors.
