Carroll Varsity Roundup (May 14): Westminster softball blasts Blake in 3A West playoffs, sets up third matchup with Man Valley

Emily Sicinski collected three doubles and Westminster’s softball team had little trouble in defeating Blake 10-4 to advance in the Class 3A West Region softball playoffs Tuesday afternoon.

Laura Tipton had three hits and two RBIs for the Owls, who improved to 11-6. Lexi Smith added two hits, and Tipton got the win along with six strikeouts.

Westminster moves into the Section 1 final Wednesday to face county foe Manchester Valley.

Manchester Valley 6, Rockville 0

Round: 3A West Section 1 semifinal

Recap: At Manchester, the reigning county champion Mavericks ran their record to 14-5 and won their playoff opener. Erika Bitzel hads three hits and Taylor Knatz added two, and Stephanie Barksdale struck out nine. Man Valley hosts Westminster on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Recap: At Westminster, the Falcons (7-10) fell behind 9-0 after four innings and couldn’t recover. Lauren Cook had three hits and two runs for WM.

Westminster 14, Magruder 2

Round: 3A West Section 1 semifinal

Recap: At Westminster, Cory Moran had three hits and launched a three-run homer for the Owls (13-7). Haden Hoff had four RBIs and Jake Sell knocked in three. Westminster advances to play at Thomas Johnson on Friday.

Gerstell 10, Glenelg Country School 7

Round: MIAA B Conference playoffs

Recap: On Monday, the Falcons (14-6) jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the top-seeded Dragons and held on for the upset. Chris Hagan had a big RBI double while Tyler Stuck and Mason Burdyck each drove in key runs. Gerstell faces Boys’ Latin on Wednesday in the next round.
