Carroll Varsity Roundup (May 6): Lacrosse regional playoff seeds set for Carroll County teams

The regional lacrosse playoffs are upon us, so let’s take a look at what’s up first for Carroll County’s boys and girls teams with first-round matchups set this week.

County champion Westminster (13-0) have a bye in Class 3A West, and the Owls will open their postseason May 10 against the winner of Blake and Rockville. Manchester Valley (7-6) hosts Watkins Mill in a 3A West Section 1 quarterfinal May 8.

In 2A West, Century (12-1) has a bye and will get the winner of Liberty-Winters Mill in the Section 1 semifinals. The Lions (5-8) defeated the Falcons (7-7) on April 4 in Eldersburg, but WM is the home team this time.

South Carroll (8-6) also has a bye in 2A West, and the Cavaliers visit Oakdale on May 10.

Francis Scott Key (5-7) has a bye in 1A West and the Eagles host Randallstown on May 10 in a Section 1 quarterfinal.

Liberty High School junior Jordan Nastos is one of the top softball players in the Carroll County Athletic League.

Century (12-2) and South Carroll (11-1) each have byes in 2A West on the girls side, and the Cavs host the Knights on May 10 in a Section 1 semifinal. SC fell 16-6 to Century, the county champs, during the regular season this spring.

In other 2A West action, Liberty (7-7) hosts Winters Mill (3-9) on May 8 in a sectional quarterfinal. The Lions prevailed 14-12 when they county foes met April 3 in Westminster.

In 3A West, reigning state champion Westminster (8-6) hosts Watkins Mill on May 8 in a Section 1 quarterfinal. And Manchester Valley (8-6) hosts Magruder in another section quarterfinal May 8.

FSK (6-6) has a bye in 1A West and the Eagles take on Western Tech on May 10 in the Section 1 semifinals.

Baseball

South Carroll 3, Tuscarora 1

Reservoir 6, Manchester Valley 1

Recap: At Columbia, Matt Myers had two hits and Dalton Groupp scored the lone run for the Mavs (10-8).

Century 10, Franklin 0

Recap: At Eldersburg, Jared Lamb belted three homers and had four RBIs to power the Knights (14-4) to their sixth straight win.

Liberty 17, Joppatowne 1

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Lions (9-9) mauled the Mariners in their regular-season finale. Box score information wasn’t reported.

Pallotti 11, Gerstell 9

Recap: At Columbia, Reece Early notched his 100th career hit but the Falcons fell to 11-6 (11-6 MIAA B Conference).

Softball

Francis Scott Key 11, Winters Mill 5

Recap: At Westminster, Laura Gilford had three hits and three RBIs for the Eagles (7-9, 4-8 CCAL). Kaesey Green added three hits, and Rachel Wright joined Green with a double. Cassidy Knill had two hits for the Falcons (7-9, 6-6).

Century 10, Franklin 0

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Knights (9-9) won their third in a row behind three hits and three RBIs, from Emily Kain. Madison Sitarek added three hits, and Megan Hollander struck out eight batters.

Liberty 16, Joppatowne 1

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Lions (5-12) got a triple from Logan Heydon and three runs apiece from Emily Smith and Amy Jacobs. Jordan Nastos reached base four times and scored four runs.
