Carroll Varsity Roundup (May 3): Early helps Gerstell baseball post third consecutive victory in MIAA B Conference play

Gerstell Academy topped St. John’s Catholic Prep 6-2 in Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association baseball action Friday in Finksburg.

Reece Early struck out eight batters over four innings for the Falcons (11-5, 11-5 MIAA B), who won their fourth game in a row. Tyler Stuck smacked his first varsity homer, and Chris Hagan also went deep.


South Carroll 4, Liberty 1

Recap: At Winfield, JB Berry tossed a complete-game two-hitter with eight strikeouts for the Cavs (9-7, 8-4 Carroll County Athletic League). Berry also had two doubles and two RBIs. Jack Merchak doubled for the Lions (8-9, 6-6).

Century 5, Loyola Blakefield 3

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Knights (13-4) won their fifth in a row thanks to a grand slam from Jared Lamb in the fifth inning. Brandon Will also went deep for the home team, and Bradley Comer pitched for the win.

Linganore 7, Winters Mill 2

Recap: At Westminster, Cade Spreitzer had three hits and Conner Peters had two RBIs for the Falcons (4-13).

St. Maria Goretti 12, Francis Scott Key 5

Recap: At Hagerstown on Thursday, the Eagles fell to 4-12. Box score information wasn’t available.


Century 6, Liberty 4

Recap: At Eldersburg, Maddie Sitarek and Emily Kain had two hits and an RBI apiece for the Knights (8-9, 6-6 CCAL). Logan Heydon and Jordan Nastos each doubled for Liberty (4-12, 4-8).

South Carroll 11, South Hagerstown 6

Recap: At Hagerstown, the Cavaliers (6-13) got a pair of two-run homers from Stephanie Zirkenbach and Hailey Wolfrey. Sydni Carroll had three hits for SC, which won its third in a row.

St. Paul’s 10, Gerstell 7

Recap: At Brooklandville, the Falcons (4-13) were bounced from the IAAM A Conference playoffs. Carly Merlo kept her team close with 13 saves.

Recap: At Winfield, Man Valley’s Matthew Fairchild and Chase Estes each advanced to the singles semifinals at the county tournament. Fairchild is set to face Liberty’s Tyger Zan, while Estes gets Francis Scott Key’s Brandon Bimestefer. MV advanced a doubles team to the tourney semifinals in Matt Gordon and Conner Bopst. They’ll face Liberty’s Dylan Gettier and Ray Woodward in the semis; Century’s Danny Arriola and Nick Simon advanced to take on FSK’s Justin Rieger and Jacob Wantz.

Recap: At Eldersburg, the girls singles county tournament semifinalists include Westminster’s Kate Ruppert, Liberty's Grace Johnson and Jane Aldakkour, and South Carroll’s Casey Reno. Ruppert will play Johnson, and Aldakkour gets Reno. In doubles, reigning county champs Noelle Htwar and Emily Brecker are in the semifinals against SC’s Julia Simoncini and Rachel Linn. Also into the semis are Liberty’s Alyssa Vandenberge and Kara Bartolowits, and Century’s Micaela Wolcott and Jessica McClelland. The mixed doubles semifinals pit Century’s Kaitlin Conway and Michael Napolitano against Liberty’s Faith Coleman and Christian Harsha, and SC’s Meghan Radnoff and Gavin Baker versus Liberty’s Emily Smith and Reda Babas.
