Carroll Varsity Roundup (May 2): County tennis tourney set to begin Friday morning

The annual Carroll County Athletic League tennis tournament gets underway Friday morning at 11, with matches divided between Liberty and South Carroll high schools.

Liberty is hosting girls singles and girls doubles, and half of the mixed doubles, while SC gets boys singles, boys doubles, and the other half of mixed.


Manchester Valley’s Matthew Fairchild and Chase Estes are both 12-0 and the top two seeds in the boys singles bracket. Fairchild took second at last year’s county tourney. In girls singles, Westminster’s Kate Ruppert (11-1) is the top seed and Liberty’s Jane Aldakkour (11-1) is the No. 2 seed.

Liberty’s Dylan Gettier and Ray Woodward (12-0) have the top seed in boys doubles; Lions teammates Josh Bellows and Nathan Murphy have the No. 2 seed and are also 12-0.

In girls doubles, reigning county champions Noelle Htwar and Emily Brecker (12-0) are the top-seeded team. Century has the No. 2 seed in Michaela Wolcott and Jessica McClelland (11-3).

The Knights drew the top spot in mixed doubles with Kaitlin Conway and Michael Napolitano. The No. 2 seed comes from Liberty, with Emily Smith and Reda Babas.


Century 12, Liberty 2

Recap: At Eldersburg, the visiting Knights (12-4, 10-2 CCAL) got home runs from Connor Breitenbach and Bradley Comer. Mike Spitz had a triple and an RBI for the Lions (8-8, 6-5).

Manchester Valley 6, Catonsville 2

Recap: At Manchester, the Mavs (10-7) got four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to douse the Comets. Matt Myers had three hits and Brett DeWees collected four RBIs.

Frederick 12, South Carroll 2

Recap: At Winfield, Alex Hess and Aidan Moffatt each doubled for the Cavaliers (8-7).


Winters Mill 20, Liberty 5

Recap: At Eldersburg, Ansley Annable had a triple and a homer for the Falcons (7-8, 6-5 CCAL). Liz Chaney drove in three runs for WM. Amy Jacobs smacked a triple for the Lions (4-11, 4-8) in a game that was resumed from a few weeks ago.

South Carroll 10, Frederick 7

Recap: At Winfield, Olivia Reardon launched two homers and Ava Wallace tripled for the Cavaliers (5-13). Taylor Jackman had three hits for SC.


Boys Lacrosse

Westminster 16, Fallston 3

Recap: At Fallston, Bubba Love and Austin Sipes had four goals apiece for the Owls (13-0). Christian Etchison had two goals and two assists.

Winters Mill 14, Harford Tech 5

Recap: At Westminster on Wednesday, the Falcons improved to 7-7 behind four goals from Reid Stewart and five assists from Kaden Ross. Zach Urban handed out four assists.

Winters Mill 16, Atholton 7

Recap: At Westminster on Tuesday, Brady McGuire had two goals and four assists for WM. Kaden Ross and Alex Carr had three goals apiece.

Girls Lacrosse

Westminster 17, Fallston 3

Recap: At Westminster, Hannah Dintino led the Owls (8-6) with four goals while Anna Ruby and Lauren Saltz netted three goals apiece.

Girls Soccer

Carroll Christian 5, Granite 1

Recap: At Westminster, Sydney Wooden netted four goals and the Patriots ran their record to 7-4 (4-1 Maryland Association of Christian Schools Athletic Conference).

JV Lacrosse

Century 12, Middletown 4: The Knights finished their regular season at 11-0-1, and John Palivlick totaled three goals and three assists.

Century 13, Winters Mill 0

Century hosted McDonogh in girls lacrosse action May 2, 2019 in Eldersburg.
