Carroll Varsity Roundup: Century baseball claims second straight CCAL title

Century scored seven runs after the first two innings and held on for a 13-12 Carroll County Athletic League baseball victory against host Manchester Valley on Thursday, giving the Knights their second consecutive county championship.

Dylan Breitenbach and Brandon Will each doubled for Century (11-2, 10-0 in the county), which won its ninth game in a row. The rest of Carroll's teams have three or more county losses, and the Knights have only two county contests remaining in the regular season.

Breitenbach went 3-for-5 while Zach Raico and Matt Born had two hits apiece. Tyler Roach struck out five batters in five innings and recorded the win.

Kyle Scott went 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Mavericks (4-7, 2-6) while Dalton Groupp and Matt Myers had two hits each. Man Valley scored five runs in the seventh but fell just short of handing Century its first county defeat.

Francis Scott Key 8, Liberty 4

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Eagles (3-10, 2-8 county) snapped a three-game skid thanks to two hits and thre RBIs from Jake Pirrung. Lonnie McLain added two RBIs for FSK. Peyton Scheufele and Paul Libbee each hit doubles for Liberty (4-8, 4-6).

Recap: At Manchester, the Mavericks (7-5, 6-4 county) trailed by a run in the seventh inning before Kassidy Johnson launched a two-run homer for a walk-off win. Taylor Knatz had a double and three hits for the Mavs. Olivia Carmack had three hits and four RBIs, and Gillian Sinnott added three hits for the Knights (8-5, 6-4). Allyson Windell doubled twice and belted a triple.

C. Milton Wright 11, Liberty 1

Recap: At Bel Air, the Lions were held down and fell to 5-7. Brooke Heffler doubled for Liberty.

Boys Lacrosse

Westminster 17, South Carroll 4

Recap: At Winfield, the county champion Owls (10-1, 6-0 county) finished off a perfect CCAL regular season. Alec Kozlowski and Bubba Love had three goals each, and Chase Buckwalter handed out three assists. SC slipped to 5-8, 2-3 despite three goals from Noah Homayouni.

Fallston 10, Manchester Valley 8

Recap: At Sparks, Brandon Smith had three goals and two assists for Man Valley (5-6). Owen McCallum added two goals and one assist.

Girls Lacrosse

Winters Mill 18, Francis Scott Key 1

Recap: At Westminster, the Falcons (6-5, 2-4 county) cruised behind six goals from Madison Harmening and three from Katelyn Heffner. Sophia Barnes tallied two goals and three assists. Cameron Heflin scored for Key (2-7, 0-6).

Manchester Valley 15, Fallston 4

Recap: At Sparks, Tayler Warehime surpassed the 200 goal mark for her career and netted four for the Mavericks (6-4). Lauren Cremen and Mackenzie D'Anthony also scored four goals, and Cremen added four assists. Warehime handed out two assists.

Gerstell 16, St. James 1

Recap: At Finksburg, Katie Pettine led the way for the Falcons (7-4) with five goals and Georgia Blake added two goals and four assists. Gerstell led 12-0 at the half and won its seventh in a row.

Girls Tennis

Liberty 5, Francis Scott Key 0

Recap: At Uniontown, the Lions improved to 11-0 (11-0 county) and clinched the county championship — their 11th in a row — behind singles wins from Hannah Steier and Jane Aldakkour. FSK is 2-8, 2-8.

Manchester Valley 3, South Carroll 2

Recap: At Manchester, the Mavs (6-7, 4-7 county) got wins from Ellie Johnson and Madi Collins at singles, and the No. 2 doubles tandem of Landyn Bien and Carly Jarkiewicz. Madi Radnoff and Caroline Downing won their No. 1 doubles match for SC (8-4, 7-4).

Boys Tennis

Liberty 5, Francis Scott Key 0

Recap: At Uniontown, the Lions (11-0, 11-0 county) clinched a share of the CCAL championship with the sweep. Liberty's Tyler Shatto and Reda Babas won 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles. Key is 2-8, 1-9.

Manchester Valley 4, South Carroll 1

Recap: At Manchester, Caleb Boyle and Matt Gordon's 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles clinched the match for the Mavericks (6-7, 5-6 county). Paul Becker and Logan Baker prevailed in the No. 1 doubles match for the Cavaliers (5-7, 4-7).

Century 9, Liberty 2: Wyatt Dickey had 4 goals and the Knights (9-0-1) won a battle of unbeatens.
