Carroll Varsity Roundup (March 26): Winters Mill girls lacrosse sets season-opening win on Rising Sun

Kaitlyn Thompson and Madison Harmening had four goals apiece to lead Winters Mill past Rising Sun 17-7 on Tuesday in its girls lacrosse season opener.

Megan Thomas added three goals and Harmening had two assists, as did Sophia Barnes. Becca Thompson and Lindsey Collins each scored twice.


Century 16, Mount Hebron 5

Recap: At Eldersburg, Madison Plitt and Grace Bruce had four goals apiece for the Knights (1-1). Caroline Little netted three goals and Demma Hall handed out three assists.


Liberty 18, Patterson Mill 11

Recap: At Eldersburg, Alanna Wray led the Lions to victory with five goals, while Heidi Ellis, Caitlin Mulholland, and Valerie Thompson had three goals apiece. Hannah Shrader made eight saves.

JV result: Liberty, 14-4.

Manchester Valley 15, Harford Tech 3


Recap: At Manchester, Mia Alvarez had four goals and Kenzie D’Anthony added three goals and an assist for the Mavericks (1-1). Jeri Garland also had three goals and Belle Wade scored twice.

South Carroll 8, North Harford 6

Recap: At Winfield, Julia Weiss had 11 saves and the Cavaliers improved to 2-0.

Notre Dame Prep 18, Gerstell 9

Recap: On Monday, Emily Messinese had four goals and Haley Gochnauer tallied three assists for the Falcons (0-3, 0-3 IAAM A Conference).

Carroll County’s girls lacrosse teams experienced some firsts last season, and 2019 should bring an equal amount of excitement.

Boys Lacrosse

South Carroll 7, Bel Air 6

Recap: At Bel Air, the Cavaliers (2-0) nipped the Bobcats after trailing by three goals entering the fourth quarter. Adam McCarty had three goals and Evan Hock made 12 saves.

St. James 15, Francis Scott Key 8

Recap: At Hagerstown, Colton Price scored five goals but the Eagles dropped their season opener.


South Carroll 9, Linganore 7

Recap: At Winfield, the Cavs (2-0) trailed by five runs but battled back to take the lead, then scored two runs in the sixth after the Lancers tied the score. Alex Hess had a double, a triple, and four RBIs for SC.

Liberty 14, Meade 4 (5 inn.)

Recap: At Fort Meade, Ryan Thompson struck out six in three innings and Austin Massey smacked a grand slam for the Lions in their opener. Garrett Geidel had three hits and Paul Libbee scored three runs, as did Robert Bratchie.

Gerstell 11, Friends 1 (5 inn.)

Recap: At Baltimore, Reece Early had a triple and four RBIs for the Falcons (1-1, 1-1 MIAA B) and Tyler Stuck added a double and three RBIs. Stuck also fanned six in three innings and earned a win.

Carroll Christian 20, Park School 4 (5 inn.)

Recap: At Baltimore, Danny Blair and Dominic DiMaggio shared pitching duties for the Patriots (2-0) and Blair helped his own cause with a double.


Linganore 26, South Carroll 7 (5 inn.)

Recap: At Winfield, the Cavaliers lost their season opener in a slugfest. No box score information was reported.

Boys Tennis

Liberty 5, Winters Mill 0

Recap: At Eldersburg, Tyger Zan (6-2, 6-0) and Christian Harsha (6-0, 6-4) won their singles matches for the Lions in the opener for both county teams.

Century 4, Francis Scott Key 1

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Knights got doubles wins from Michael Napolitano and Nick Simon (6-4, 6-1), Kyle Kropfelder and Danny Arriola (6-1, 6-1), and Mason Motter and Brennan Deibel (6-0, 6-0). Justin Reiger (3-6, 6-2, 10-7) won at No. 1 singles for the Eagles.

Linganore 3, South Carroll 2

Recap: At New Market, SC got wins from Gavin Baker (6-6, 4-1) won at No. 2 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Andrew Dolecki and Zach McDonough (6-4, 6-2).

Recap: At Eldersburg, the Knights got a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 1 doubles from Micaela Wolcott and Jessica McClelland. FSK’s Jocelyn Snader won her No. 1 singles match 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 (tiebreaker set).

Recap: At New Market, Casey Reno (6-0, 6-0) and Jess Beddow (6-1, 6-1) earned singles points for the Cavaliers in their opener.
