Maryland’s high school basketball postseason begins this weekend, and there are seven Carroll teams slated for action with the other seven drawing first-round byes.

There are two intra-county matchups in Class 2A West Section 1, one on the boys side and one for girls. But there’s another interesting 2A West scenario, one that has Liberty’s boys team (20-2) traveling to Oakdale for its playoff opener next week despite having a better record.

The Lions’ two losses, against Century and Franklin, count toward their official Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association playoff seeding. Meanwhile, the Bears are 20-3 but dropped only one game that mattered in terms of regional seeds. The Frederick County team lost a pair of holiday tournament games, which don’t count. Liberty visits Oakdale on March 4.

Century, which shared this year’s Carroll County Athletic League title with the Lions, also has a first-round bye. The Knights (19-3) are riding an 11-game winning streak into the playoffs.

They’ll get the winner of Winters Mill at South Carroll, which tips off Friday night at 6. The Cavaliers (8-14) beat the Falcons (3-19) twice during the regular season.

In 1A West Section 2, Francis Scott Key (5-17) visits Catoctin on Friday. The Eagles went 1-1 against the Cougars this winter.

Manchester Valley (5-17) travels to Rockville on Friday in a 3A West Section 1 quarterfinal. Westminster (12-10) waits for the winner March 4.

In girls basketball, county champion Francis Scott Key (18-3) has a bye in 1A West Section 2. The Eagles will host the New Era Academy-Boonsboro winner March 5.

Liberty (9-13) hosts Century (5-17) in a 2A West Section 1 quarterfinal Saturday night at 6. The Lions won both regular-season matchups.

Winters Mill (12-9) hosts South Carroll (9-12) on March 5 in a 2A West Section 1 semifinal. The county foes split their two games this winter.

Manchester Valley (8-13) hosts Magruder in a 3A West Section 1 quarterfinal Saturday night at 6:30, while Westminster (16-6) has a bye and gets the Watkins Mill-Blake winner on March 5 at home.

The annual state tournament gets underway Friday at Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro. The preliminary rounds starts at 2:30, followed by quarterfinals at 6:15 and consolation prelims at 8:15.

Saturday starts with consolation matches at 9:30 a.m., and the championship semifinals are slated for 11. Then it’s consolation quarterfinals at 1:15 p.m, consolation semis and 2:15, and consolation finals (third through sixth place) at 4.

The championship finals should begin around 6:30.
