Carroll Varsity Roundup (Feb. 8): Winters Mill girls hand Francis Scott Key its first CCAL loss

Francis Scott Key secured the outright Carroll County Athletic League girls basketball championship last week, but Winters Mill on Friday made sure the Eagles didn’t close out the regular season without a county loss.

Kolby Brown and Erin Snyder scoed 12 points apiece for the Falcons, who pulled away for a 50-35 win in Westminster.


Natalie Berry and Kaitlyn Thompson had six points apiece, and Thompson matched Snyder with eight rebounds. Winters Mill (9-8, 6-4 CCAL) led 13-7 after the first quarter and set the tone.

Savannah Brooks scored 11 points for the Eagles, who fell to 17-2, 10-1. Bailey Mathias added 10 points.

JV result: FSK, 39-31 (FSK-Libby Kiley 13 points; WM-Katelyn Heffner 9).

Westminster 48, South Carroll 28

Recap: At Winfield, Sophia Diehl posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Owls (14-6, 8-3 CCAL). Zoe Costley scored 16 and grabbed six boards, and Jillian Pumputis had four steals.Lauren Habighorst led the Cavaliers (8-9, 5-5) with eight points.

Liberty 49, Century 40

Recap: At Eldersburg, the host Lions (7-11, 4-5 CCAL) got 27 points from Rachel Thiem in the win. Alex Bull had seven assists, and Thiem pulled down 12 rebounds. Jess Diorio paced Century (4-14, 0-10) with 15 points.

Manchester Valley 53, North Hagerstown 34


Recap: At Manchester, Josey Klingenberg totaled 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals for the Mavericks (6-10). Amelia Saunders scored 13 points, and Erin Piper went for six points and five boards.

Glenelg Country School 36, Gerstell 32

Recap: At Ellicott City, the Falcons (3-22) played in their first Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference postseason game but came up short.

Boys Basketball

Winters Mill 55, Francis Scott Key 51

Recap: At Uniontown, the Falcons snapped an 11-game long streak and won their first CCAL contest behind 30 points from Chandler Gentzel. Avery Serafin and Alan Jean Joseph scored 11 points apiece for WM (3-15, 1-9). Noah Vipond finished with 17 points for the Eagles (5-14, 2-9).


JV result: FSK, 47-37 (FSK-Bryce Zepp 11 points).

South Carroll 53, Westminster 43

Recap: At Westminster, Carson Scott scored a game-high 25 for the Cavaliers (7-10), who got back to .500 in the CCAL at 5-5. Christian Etchison led the Owls (12-6, 7-3) with 14 points and 14 rebounds.


River Hill 55, Century 15

Recap: At Clarksville on Thursday, Thomas Morey (195) picked up a pin for the Knights (6-25) while Jack Armstrong (120), Devon Sikkenga (152), and Alex Ellis (170) each recorded victories.
