Carroll Varsity Roundup (Feb. 5): Giles goes for 20 points, Westminster knocks off city rival Winters Mill

Drue Giles had a game-high 20 points and Westminster’s boys basketball topped city rival and host Winters Mill 56-38 in Carroll County Athletic League action Tuesday.
The Owls (12-5) improved to 7-2 in CCAL play. Terrence McDonald added 10 points and sank three 3-pointers. Chander Gentzel had 11 points for the Falcons (2-15, 0-9) and Alan Jean Joseph scored 11.
Liberty 70, Francis Scott Key 49
Recap: At Eldersburg, the Lions remained undefeated (16-0, 7-0 CCAL) behind 21 points and 14 rebounds from Tristan Kent. Peyton Scheufele added 13 points, Connor Stewart collected 11 points and eight assists, and Jack Merchak pulled down seven boards. Noah Vipond’s game-high 25 points fueled the Eagles (5-13, 2-8).
Recap: At Winfield, the Mavericks (4-12, 3-5 CCAL) halted a six-game losing streak thanks in part to a double-double from Hunter Olshefski, who had 15 points and 11 rebounds. He added four steals. Dahon Saunders had 16 points and four assists, and Dayne Koontz added six assists. Dylan Graham scored 14 for the Cavs (6-10, 4-5) and Mason Gavin netted 12.
Westminster 48, Winters Mill 39
Recap: At Westminster, the visiting Owls (13-6, 8-3 CCAL) got 17 points and 10 rebounds from Zoe Costley, and 14 boards from Sophia Diehl. Natalie Berry scored 11 for Winters Mill (8-8, 5-4) while Kolby Brown and Erin Snyder had nine points apiece.
Recap: At Glen Burnie, Sydney Wooden had 19 points for the Pats (17-1, 8-0 Maryland Association of Christian Schools Athletic Conference) and Camille Echegoyen grabbed 10 rebounds. Echegoyen added eight points, five steals, and four rebounds. Mikaela Martin had eight points, seven boards, and five steals.
