Carroll Varsity Roundup (Jan. 18): Costley, Diehl lead Westminster girls past Man Valley

Zoe Costley and Sophia Diehl combined for 31 points and led Westminster’s girls basketball team to a 41-30 victory over host Manchester Valley in Carroll County Athletic League action Friday night,.

Diehl dominated with 17 rebounds and 14 points, and Costley scored 17 for the Owls (10-4, 5-2 CCAL). The teammates also combined for six blocks.


Josey Klingenberg totaled 15 points, eight steals, and seven rebounds for the Mavericks (4-8, 1-5), and Amelia Saunders added 10 points and six boards. Erin Piper grabbed eight rebounds.

Francis Scott Key 45, Century 25


Recap: At Eldersburg, Karla Stonesifer scored 11 points for the Eagles (13-1, 7-0 CCAL). Savannah Brooks and Kennedy Cornick each scored nine, and Sara Warthen had six points. Jess Diorio and Kailyn Jones led the Knights (3-11, 0-7) with six points apiece.

JV result: Century, 41-39.

Carroll Christian 52, Granite Baptist 33

Recap: At Westminster, Camille Echegoyen had 13 points and six steals for the Patriots (13-1, 7-0 Maryland Association of Christian Schools Athletic Conference). Mikaela Martin had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and added seven assists and five steals.

Boys Basketball

Century 55, Francis Scott Key 41

Recap: At Uniontown, Matt Huber paced the Knights (10-3, 6-1 CCAL) with 14 points. Ryan Rill scored a team-high 11 for the Eagles (4-11, 1-6).

JV result: Century, 55-48 (C-Colby Owings 20; FSK-Luke Breezee 21).

Liberty 64, Patterson Mill 45

Recap: At Bel Air, the Lions improved to 13-0 behind Tristan Kent’s 19 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. Jack Merchak scored 14 to go with four assists, and Connor Stewart handed out seven assists. Peyton Scheufele had 10 points and six rebounds.

JV result: Liberty, 47-38 (Shane Stewart 16).

Carroll Christian 66, Granite Baptist 49

Recap: At Westminster, Sean Goldsmith had 18 points for the Patriots and Josiah Albaugh had 17.
