Carroll Varsity Roundup (Jan. 16): Rachel Thiem leads Liberty past Century in Carroll County girls hoops action

Liberty held Century to 14 first-half points, and 11 in the second half to defeat the Knights 54-25 in Carroll County Athletic League girls basketball action at Liberty on Thursday.

Senior forward Rachel Thiem led the Lions (7-5, 4-2 CCAL) with a double-double — 13 points and 10 rebounds. Maddi Haggerty scored 10 points and Jess Littlejohn added eight points and seven steals. Jordan Nastos contributed five assists for the Lions. Demma Hall scored nine points for the Knights (5-8, 2-4).


Manchester Valley 34, Linganore 28

Highlights: Amelia Saunders led the way with 11 points, nine rebounds, and five steals for the Mavericks (7-5). Grace Warner added nine points and nine rebounds in the Mavs’ second straight win.

Mt. Carmel 56, Gerstell 27

Highlights: On Wednesday, Marley Saunders had seven points and Kylie Redman scored six for the Falcons (7-7, 3-3 IAAM B).

Boys Basketball

Mount St. Joseph 86, Gerstell 52

Highlights: On Wednesday, Dayyan Noble netted 20 points for the Falcons (6-14) and Jaden Davis poured in 16. Jeremiah Stanton added 14 for Gerstell.


Winters Mill 70, Francis Scott Key 12

Highlight: The Falcons (11-1, 3-1 CCAL) posted nine pins in their county win. Zach Kirby (132) improved to 24-0 with his 37-second pin. Dustin Burgett (285) and Wyatte Johns (220) each a pin for the Eagles (3-6, 0-4).

Oakdale 42, Century 37; Southern Garrett 65, Century 16

Highlight: The Knights got pins from Stephen Hurst, Nick Schuyler, Brayan Bautista, and Jake Hurst against the Bears. Stephen Hurst registered the team’s lone pin against the Rams.
