Carroll Varsity Roundup (Jan. 9): South Carroll wrestling sweeps Century, Liberty in tri-meet

South Carroll had eight wrestlers post two wins apiece and defeated Century and Liberty in the southern county rivals’ annual tri-meet in Eldersburg.

The Cavaliers (11-6, 5-0 Carroll County Athletic League) beat the Knights 49-21 and took care of the Lions 45-30.


Ryan Athey (106), Anthony Bond (113), Jake Rippeon (126), Cam Werner (138), Tyler Harbison (145), Steven Dahl (152), Antonio Bradford (160), and Pat Quinn (285) each went 2-0 for SC.

Liberty (18-3, 3-1) earned a tri-meet split by beating Century 51-23. The Lions got pins from Ryan Ohler (113), Daniel Bird (126), Jake Gaskin (132), Anthony Marsico (145), Samme Nehme (170), McClain Butler (182), and Max Ellis (195).

Ohler, Gaskin, Butler, Ellis, and Noah Wienclawski each went 2-0.

The Knights fell to 3-13, 0-3. Stephen Hurst (138) and Billy Bentley (152) each had pins against Liberty.

Winters Mill 47, Westminster 31

Recap: At Westminster, the Falcons (9-4,3-0 CCAL) enjoyed their county home opener with pins from Garrett Dell (106), Logan Konold (120), Colby Unkart (132), Jake Stiff (152), Josh Burndley (160), and Noah Ocasio (195). Tyler Beaver (113), Zach Caltrider (138), Jack Conrad (220), and Josh Howard (285) picked up pins for the Owls (7-15, 0-4).

Boys Basketball

South Carroll 62, Manchester Valley 53

Recap: At Manchester, Carson Scott sank four 3-pointers and led the Cavs (5-6, 3-3 CCAL) with 19 points. Mason Gavin had 17 points for SC, and also drained four 3s. The Mavs (3-8, 2-3) got 18 points from Dahon Saunders and 11 from Dayne Koontz.


JV result: MV, 33-28.

Westminster 76, Fallston 47

Recap: At Westminster, the Owls (7-3) won their fourth in a row behind 15 points apiece from Joe Wright and Drue Giles, who sank four 3-pointers. Christian Etchison added 11 points.

JV result: Westminster, 52-30.

Girls Basketball

Westminster 54, Fallston 34

Recap: At Fallston, Zoe Costley had 18 points and Jillian Pumputis added 13 for Westminster (7-4), which led 28-7 at the half and never looked back. Sophia Diehl grabbed five rebounds.
