Abby Zeigenfuse walked up to the ball with confidence.
Needing one penalty kick to send Manchester Valley past Westminster in Thursday’s Class 3A West Section 1 final, she placed her shot into the top left corner of the net, just past the reach of Owls goalkeeper Kristen Janeczek.
The Mavericks fell short to their county rival in the sectional semifinals last year in overtime, but saw the results fall their way this time around.
Zeigenfuse’s goal was the difference, and Man Valley advanced to the regional final in dramatic fashion, capturing a 5-4 win in penalty kicks.
“We’re so excited,” Mavs coach Denise Hoff said following the win. “This is the furthest we’ve been as a 3A school and we’re really excited to be celebrating as a team.”
“We started 0-5 and then we came together,” she said. “We had a big team talk and we were like, ‘let’s just get through it now.’ We’re a very strong, physical team … but once we came together … we really picked it up.”
