Century and Winters Mill's girls lacrosse teams played almost a full half of the Class 2A West Section 1 final Monday evening, and the Knights led 4-3 before lightning was detected in the area.
The game started at about 5:50 p.m., 10 minutes earlier than its original 6 p.m. time, in order to play as much as possible prior to any inclement weather in the area. The Knights led the Falcons 4-3 with 1:56 remaining in the first half when the game was delayed.
The Knights picked up a three-goal lead to start the contest, sparked by freshman Demma Hall's tally about 30 seconds in. Maddie Bates, Madison Plitt and Grace Bruce notched goals for the Knights.
Kaitlyn Thompson, Megan Thomas and Anna Diffendal scored for Winters Mill.
The game was delayed until 8:30 p.m. and Plitt notched a second goal before more lightning was spotted in the area — the half had not yet finished.
A rescheduled time and place has yet to be determined.
Century and Winters Mill are meeting for the second time this season. The Knights, who won a state championship last spring, defeated the Falcons during the regular season, 17-14, and outlasted South Carroll in a sectional semifinal on Friday.
Winters Mill has racked up six straight wins, including a thrilling 12-11 overtime victory Friday night at Oakdale to advance in the playoffs. They defeated county foe Liberty 18-7 at home on May 9.
