Key losses: Avery Arena, Shaye Montgomery

Key returners: Colby Brodsky, Sarah Deese, Julia Noll, Natalie Poulton, Emma Yockman

Outlook: The Knights took second place at last year's county meet and Poulton, a senior, finished 16 seconds behind champion Emma Kartalia. Poulton, a Times first-team all-countian in 2016, will lead a team of young Knights this season. "With a young team, the girls look to see how new runners will contribute to the team's success," Mead said via email. "With a few freshmen showing promise, they plan on keeping their goals lofty."

Key returners: Lakota Comeau, Maddie Hauppa, Shelby Holland, Kallista Matthews

Outlook: Comeau, the Eagles' top runner, is back and Bartling said she is a "strong, confident and supportive team leader and athlete" looking to make some marks with a young roster this year. Key returners: Natalie Lansinger, Maeve Lyons, Lilly Rainey, Heidi Rinehart, Jenna Zietowski

Outlook: The Lions competed well last season without Lyons and Rinehart, their top two runners. The girls are back, relieved of their previous injuries and should even out another talented group this year. "While we lost some important varsity athletes and leadership, we hope to bring a few new runners along to get back to a winning season," Jones said via email. "Having Heidi and Maeve back healthy is a major step in the right direction, but we will need a few others to step up."

Outlook: The Cavaliers return Lausch, who finished 15th at the county meet last season, as well as Trail, to help even out the depth without first-team all-countians Anderson and Ruckel. "We have a lot of depth with talented returning and new runners," Price said via email. "We are looking forward to a great season to repeat our success of the past few years and plan to build a strong team in the years to come."

McGrath, a junior and another all-countian, returns to help lead the Owls. "The girls lost quite a few seniors last year but return some very good runners with multiple years of varsity experience," DuLaney said via email. "Freshmen comprise 44 percent of the team so there will be some new faces on the varsity team rather quickly."

2016 county meet finish: 1st
