Key returners: Eva Brandt, junior F; Demma Hall, senior G: Samantha Seledee, senior G

Outlook: The Knights went from winless in the county to a winning record last year, and Fieni has a first-team all-county player to lean on in Brandt (8.5 ppg, county-best 10.1 rpg). “This season we aim to improve practice to practice and game by game,” Fieni said via email. “Our girls have come prepared to compete and are focused on any and all opportunities to succeed this season.”

Francis Scott Key

Coach: TJ Develin, 3rd year

Last year: 4-20, 1-11 CCAL

Next game: Jan. 9 at South Carroll

Key loss: Rachel Wright

Key returners: Ally Mathias, sophomore G; Hailey Mursch, senior F

Outlook: Mathias is back after a first-team all-county campaign, with 11.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Mursch, a second-teamer, averaged 6.1 points and 6.2 rebounds as a junior. Develin said via email he’s looking at this season as “one of tremendous growth.”

Liberty

Coach: Barry Green, 9th year

Last year: 17-8, 8-4 CCAL

Next game: Jan. 11 vs Westminster

Key losses: Jordan Nastos, Rachel Thiem, Val Thompson

Key returners: Kayla Allen, senior G/F; Alex Bull, senior G/F; Sam Hardy, senior F; Jess Littlejohn, junior G

Outlook: Losing Thiem and Nastos to graduation means losing two floor leaders and the Lions’ leading scorer and rebounder from a year ago. But Liberty regroups with a balanced host of veterans, led by second-team all-county picks Bull (10.1 ppg) and Littlejohn (9.9). Green also returns guard Kassie O’Hern and swing player Maddie Haggerty.

Manchester Valley

Coach: Heather DeWees, 12th year

Last year: 14-10, 7-5 CCAL

First game: Jan. 8 at Westminster

Key losses: Tessa Boswell, Kassidy Johnson, Amelia Saunders, Josey Shaffer

Key returners: Carmaya Bowman, sophomore F; Casey Meredith, sophomore G; Kendall Reitz, senior C; Grace Warner, senior F

Outlook: Johnson, Saunders, and Shaffer all graduated, and Boswell transferred to John Carroll, leaving a void in the lineup. They’ll be replacing the reigning POY in Saunders (17.8 ppg) but Bowman is back after a second-team all-county season. “For us to be successful, we need 4-5 people scoring in order to replace the 40 points in offense we lost from last year,” DeWees said via email.

South Carroll

Coach: Jim Shea, 3rd year

Last year: 6-17, 5-7 CCAL

Next game: Jan. 8 vs FSK

Key losses: Paige Abbott, Sydni Carroll, Kennedy Evans, Lauren Habighorst, Rachel Tackett

Key returners: Bethany Fowler, senior; Shannon McTavish, sophomore; Grace Oetken, senior; Olivia Reardon, senior; Sarah Vaught, senior

Outlook: Tackett was a first-team all-county selection last winter after averaging 8.2 points, and Abbott was SC’s top free-throw shooter in 2019-20. A healthy Fowler (she was first-team all-county as a sophomore) bodes well for the Cavs’ success. “With the season being so short we are looking to work hard and get better every day, and most importantly, have some fun,” Shea said via email.

Westminster

Coach: Dave Urban, 4th year

Last year: 16-8, 10-2 CCAL (champs)

Next game: Jan. 8 vs Man Valley

Key losses: Lillian Harris, Meghan Ruth, Maddie Olexy, Mallory Phillips

Key returners: Emily Davis, senior F; Abby Kindle, sophomore G; Jillian Pumputis, senior G; Carlie Rosewag, sophomore F

Outlook: The Owls fell just short of winning a regional title with one of the top players in Carroll in Harris (16.1 ppg) leading the way. Harris and a few other contributors are gone, but Westminster has backcourt experience returning with Davis and Pumputis (second-team all-county). “The coaches are excited about, not only the girls that will be returning ... but also the youth and variety of skill sets that we have at our disposal,” Urban said via email.

Winters Mill

Coach: Olivia Bowersox, 1st year

Last year: 5-17, 4-8 CCAL

Next game: Jan. 11 at South Carroll

Key losses: None

Key returners: Allie Cullison, senior G; Madison Harmening, senior G; Katelyn Heffner, senior G; Veronica Paylor, senior G

Outlook: The Falcons’ new coach is no stranger to the program, having played at Winters Mill and earning first-team all-county honors in 2007. Bowersox has a bevy of seniors, led by another first-teamer in Cullison (8.7 ppg). “We have been having some really good practices thanks to the leadership of eight returning seniors,” Bowersox said via email. “I believe we will be competitive every single night.”
