Aaron Wolcott walked over to the blacked out Century student section, pumping his fists as he hyped up the crowd.
It was Century’s Homecoming game, and the Knights’ county clash with Winters Mill was also featured as the Baltimore Ravens RISE High School Football Showdown Game of the Week.
Fans vote for an area high school football matchup to be featured by the Ravens and the Baltimore Sun every week of the high school football regular season. The selected game receives visits from the Ravens cheerleaders and the team’s mascot, Poe, as well as have their stadium decorated in Ravens banners and flags.
Poe and a trio of the Ravens cheerleaders joined the Century and Winters Mill team captains at midfield for the coin toss prior to kickoff.
The Knights, led by seniors Brett Kropinski, Aaron Wolcott, and JT Schneider, earned their second shutout on the season with a 41-0 rout.
The Falcons, led by senior quarterback Alex Barnes, drove down field and picked up three first downs before Barnes was intercepted by Century’s Dylan Wardle. Four plays later, Kropinski found senior receiver Jalen Stanton for a 20-yard touchdown — Kevin Hackett kicked an extra point and the Knights led 7-0 about halfway through the first quarter.
Century held the Falcons to a three-and-out on the visiting squad’s next drive, and Kropinski found Wolcott open for a 53-yard score on the Knights’ first play.
Kropinski was almost intercepted by Falcons’ receiver Stephen Maier with 6:34 left in the second quarter, but the ball was dropped. Century’s Brandon Will picked off a Barnes pass from the 14-yard line and returned it to the 33, but the Falcons held the hosts to a three-and-out.
Kropinski found Wolcott for another Knights’ touchdown, but Hackett’s kick was deflected by WM’s Anthony Cegielski — Century took a 34-0 lead into halftime.
Landon Bruce took a handoff from Kropinski and broke through the Falcons defense to put the Knights up 27-0 in the third quarter.
Winters Mill senior Austin Plummer intercepted Kropinski’s pass with 3:56 remaining in the third quarter.
Schneider took off for the end zone on a 52-yard carry to give the Knights a 34-0 lead early in the fourth quarter, and K.C. Ahulamibe followed suit on a 12-yard run of his own to close out the Knights’ scoring, and the game.
Century and Winters Mill were both coming off losses in Week 8 — the Knights lost to Boonsboro on the road and the Falcons were routed by Westminster at Ruby Field.
The Knights entered the game in fourth place in the Class 2A West Region point standings with 47 points.
The Knights host undefeated Liberty next week in the annual crosstown showdown, and the Falcons host Francis Scott Key to close out the regular season.
