Tobias, Koch lead Winters Mill to road win against Century

For the second straight week, miscues cost Century in a big way.

Winters Mill forced several turnovers and senior running back Will Tobias scored a pair of touchdowns as the Falcons topped the Knights 23-6 on Thursday.

With Winters Mill struggling to move the ball early, the Falcons relied on their defense to give them a short field. Following the second straight fumble by the Knights on a punt return, WM set up shop at the Century 35-yard line.

“Our kids are pretty opportunistic,” Winters Mill coach Matt Miller said. “Our kids are always looking for the football to fly around. They are fun to coach. Great group of kids.”

Tobias started the drive taking direct snaps and gave the Falcons’ offense a boost with runs of 8, 6, and 5 yards. The Century defense buckled down and forced a fourth down but Tobias punched it in from a yard out to give the Falcons a 7-6 lead.

The second half started promisingly enough for Knights as they recovered a pooch kick to open the half. A false start penalty, a tackle in the backfield, and a fumbled snap had the Knights moving in the wrong direction.

“We just made some costly turnovers at times,” Century coach Todd Edmondson said. “[They] win the turnover battle by four, obviously, it’s going to be tough.”

Following the ensuing Century punt, Tobias put the game away. On a second and long, Tobias took the direct snap, avoided a tackle in the backfield and got to the outside. Once outside, he shifted into high gear and left the Knights in his dust with an 84-yard touchdown that put WM up 14-6.

“We have been working all week to get a run like that,” Tobias said. “Our linemen came through and it’s all on them. They got their blocks done, got to the outside and we scored a touchdown.”

On the next drive, Century (1-2) fumbled for the third time in the game. It was recovered by Falcons senior defensive back Joe Benedictis at the Century 30. Winters Mill (2-2) picked up a first down before its drive stalled and junior kicker Braxtyn Koch knocked through a 33-yard field goal.

Century got on the board first, capitalizing on a Winters Mill mistake. On a fourth down deep in their own territory, Koch dropped back to punt. Several Knights crashed in on Koch and blocked the punt with junior Erik Harrell recovering the ball in the end zone.

Late in the fourth quarter, Koch capped off the scoring by putting an exclamation point on the game. He stepped in front of a Century pass and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown and a 23-6 final.

“Our kids have a lot of heart,” Miller said of his team’s ability to rally from an early deficit. “I am very proud for them to come out here [and win]. We were without some kids. Without our starting quarterback. We threw a lot at them on a short week, they rose to the occasion and beat a good football team.”
