ELDERSBURG — Westminster traveled to Century Friday night where both teams entered the contest undefeated in Carroll County Athletic League play, and the Owls took control of the game from the start.
Westminster dominated both sides of the ball in the first half and amassed a large lead on its way to a 32-20 victory.
The Owls (5-1, 3-0 in the county) held the Knights (4-2, 2-1) to just three offensive plays for 10 yards in the opening quarter. Westminster controlled the time of possession and that paid off early in the second quarter when Christian Etchison tossed a 1-yard pass to Tavian Montgomery for the first touchdown of the game.
Etchsion completing passes would be the theme of the first half, as the senior quarterback complete 16 of 23 passes for 225 yards to go along with three touchdowns in the first half.
He finished with 344 yards (unofficial) and four touchdowns.
And Westminster’s defense kept pace, allowing just seven points to the Knights while intercepting three of Brett Kropinski’s passes. Two of those interceptions were made by lineman Arron Miles.
After an ineffective first quarter, Century hit a big play with 4 minutes remaining in the second quarter. Kropinski dropped back to pass and threaded a pass between two Westminster defenders to Kevin Hackett, who took it the rest of the way for a 53-yard score.
The long touchdown cut the Owls lead to 17-7.
But Etchison and the Owls would respond immediately. On the first play after the kickoff Etchison found Ben Flowers deep down the left side of the field to complete a pass and catch of 68 yards for Etchison’s second touchdown. Flowers made big plays throughout the game, snaring three passes for 110 yards in the first half.
Etchison’s third touchdown of the first half came with just five seconds remaining and it went to Nathan Mattingly for 11 yards to give Westminster an insurmountable 24-7 lead going into the break.
The Knights tacked on two second-half touchdowns, each coming from a Kropinski throw, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit and get Century back in the game.
Kropinski completed 20 of 35 passes for 270 yards (unofficial) with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
Century had won its four previous games after a Week 1 loss, but came up short in its first county loss in front of the home crowd.
Etchison’s fourth touchdown came in the third quarter on a 29-yard pass down the middle to Montgomery.
Montgomery hauled in seven catches for 74 yards to go along with two scores.
With the victory the Owls have won three consecutive games and look to be firing on all cylinders. Despite a couple of lapses Westminster controlled the entire game against the Knights and came out still unbeaten in the county.
Westminster hosts undefeated Liberty next week in a big CCAL contest.
