Winters Mill needed a little extra time to edge county rival Manchester Valley on Friday night — and snap a five-game losing streak in the process.
Alex Barnes’ 5-yard touchdown run in overtime lifted the Falcons to 26-20 victory on Homecoming night.
Winters Mill (2-5, 1-2 in the county) got to overtime despite Man Valley erasing a 20-7 lead with 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Mavs quarterback Dallas Engel had a pair of touchdown runs, and his second came with 53 seconds to go. The point after skidded wide right, however, and the score remained tied at 20-20.
Man Valley (2-5, 1-3) got the ball first in the OT, from the 10-yard line, and Engel used his legs to get down to the 5. Winters Mill forced a fourth down, however, and the Mavs opted to pass rather than try a field goal.
WM’s Austin Plummer came up with an interception near the goal line to end the visiting team’s possession.
The Falcons took over, and Barnes found the end zone from 5 yards out a few plays later. Winters Mill fans raced onto the field to celebrate, while some of the Mavericks remained on the turf — stunned in the moments following Barnes’ game-winning touchdown.
The senior had two touchdown runs and a touchdown pass for Winters Mill.
But the Mavericks forced a turnover late in regulation, with WM trying to run out the clock near midfield, and lined up for a 51-yard field goal attempt. MV senior Dayne Koontz gave it a go with a big boot, but the ball fell a few yards short of the goal posts.
Mavs senior Evan Bare recovered a fumble near midfield with about 8 minutes remaining that set up his team’s game-tying drive. Man Valley converted three fourth-down attempts to keep the possession going, and Engel ended it with his second touchdown run.
Winters Mill had the momentum late in the third quarter when running back Garrison Cashman broke free and reeled off a 33-yard touchdown run. The Falcons missed the extra point, but still led 20-7.
It almost wasn’t enough, however.
The Falcons embarked on a long drive that ended late in the second quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run from Barnes. Winters Mill led 14-7 after the scoring dash, but the Mavericks made their move to try and things up.
Engel marched MV’s offense across midfield, and looked to connect on a long pass down the near sideline. But Barnes came over on defense and snagged the interception.
