Liberty girls basketball cruises past Brunswick to open season | Carroll County varsity roundup (Dec. 7)

Jess Littlejohn, Maddie Haggerty and Kassie O’Hern all finished in double figures scoring, as Liberty girls basketball earned a convincing 56-19 victory over Brunswick to open the season on Tuesday night.

Littlejohn finished with a team-high 16 points, while Haggerty was right behind her with 13. O’Hern scored 11 points and had a team-high 7 assists. Dani Paulsen was the Lions’ leader with 6 steals.

Junior Carmaya Bowman (13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 assists) had a big all-around game to lead the Mavericks in their season opener. Both sophomore Autumn Stottlemire scored and junior Casey Meredith scored 12 points each. Sophomore Reese Kresslein added 8 points and 4 rebounds, while senior Taylor Leaman grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds in the victory.

Westminster junior Abby Kindle scored a game-high 14 points and sophomore Julianna Lesher added 12 points in a balanced scoring attack for the Owls. Westminster also got a solid performance from senior Kylie McWilliams, who pulled down 7 rebounds to go with 3 assists and 3 steals.

For Thomas Johnson, Shawn Jones led the way with 13 points and Trinity Lindblade chipped in with 9.

The Knights came out fast and never slowed down, playing tough defense and getting several big offensive performances. Eva Brandt had nine points and 14 rebounds, Erin Mellendick had 12 points, and Mia Graff had 9 points. Other standouts for Century were Emma Gordon (4 points, 4 steals and 7 rebounds) and Caroline Little (4 points and 4 steals).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Liberty 76, Brunswick 37

All 11 players scored for the Lions, with Shane Stewart leading all scorers with 21 points. Liberty’s pressure on defense was the difference in the game that got them out to a lot of fast-break points.

Francis Scott Key got out to an early lead using a press to create turnovers before pulling away to a 55-28 victory over the visiting Catoctin Cougars. Ryan Rill led the way for FSK with 20 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals. Jaeden Heiser pitched in with 15 points and 4 assists. Catoctin was led by Ryan Burke with 7 points.
