Boys Lacrosse: Delays for Century, Winters Mill in 2A West Section 1 semifinal

WOODBINE — It took a little while for Century to get things going against Winters Mill on Friday.

The Knights gave up an early goal against the Falcons, but rallied to score eight straight and take a 9-4 lead over the Falcons in a Class 2A West Section 1 semifinal at Western Regional Park before inclement weather halted the game.

The teams endured two 30-minute lightning delays — first with 5 minutes, 58 seconds left in the final quarter, and then at 3:56. The winner will play either Oakdale or South Carroll in the sectional final.

The WM-Century game is slated to resume at Western Regional on May 11 at 10 a.m.

Knights senior Brett Kropinski scored three goals and and Brady Crumbacker scored twice and added an assist. Winters Mill’s Kaden Ross and Luke Chmar each scored twice.

Chmar, a sophomore midfielder, found the back of the net first for the Falcons. From there, Century took control.

Senior Carter Truby found Alex Hillis to spark the team’s run, but Falcons goalie Jax Francisco made some of Century’s attempts difficult. Francisco made a diving save that stopped junior Matt Daniel’s shot early in the second quarter.

Daniel found Crumbacker from behind the goal to give the Knights a 3-1 lead and they carried a 5-1 lead into the break. The Knights scored three more goals before Falcons senior midfielder/attackman Kaden Ross trimmed the deficit 8-2 with just over a minute left in the third quarter.

That goal sparked a 3-0 scoring run for Winters Mill.

The Falcons won the next face-off and Chmar scored about 39 seconds after Ross. Century senior goalie Adam Zimmerman chased a loose ball, but was unable to recover in time when Chmar fired his second shot in.

Ross scored again to cut the lead by four early in the fourth quarter before Crumbacker cut the Falcons’ run with 9:32 left.

“Offensively, we’re a lot smarter and a lot more patient with the ball,” Knights coach Jeremy Benson said. “They run a zone so it gives us a good look to stay patient and try to work where we find spacing. Us being down 1-0, the guys stayed composed and didn’t rush anything and were able to maintain the lead. The defense is holding is down like they have all season and they’re adjusting to what the offense does to take advantage of our defensive matchups.”

Century defeated Winters Mill 10-3 on April 23.
