McDaniel Notebook: Women's swimming records first consecutive wins in nine years

The McDaniel women's swimming team ended January on a high it hadn't experienced in nine years.

The Green Terror went 2-0 last week for their first consecutive victories since 2002-03. McDaniel bested Elizabethtown 62-33 at home last Wednesday before beating Bryn Mawr 132-118 on the road Saturday, the team's first two wins since Oct. 29.

That improved the Terror's record to 3-7 (1-5 Centennial Conference), giving them three wins in a season for the first time since going 3-8 in 2006-07. McDaniel hasn't had more victories since going 5-6 in 2005-06.

Senior Jessica Fry recorded three individual wins against Elizabethtown, as the Terror took first in nine of 11 events in the meet. Fry was victorious in the 1,000-yard freestyle, the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Sophomore Emma Duesterhaus also had a three-win day.

Sophomore Kerrie Vanscoy won three events against Bryn Mawr - the 100 backstroke, the 200 backstroke and the 200 medley relay - while three others had two victories.

Men's swimming

Freshman Stephen Hoyt's three-win performance against Elizabethtown last Wednesday led the Green Terror to their first win since Oct. 29.

McDaniel (2-7) won nine of 11 events for a 56-37 victory. Hoyt participated in the Terror's 200 medley relay win while taking first in the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle.

Senior James Eu, sophomore Jesse Mills, junior Bryan Nuckles and junior Jono Leafblad each added two wins.

Men's indoor track

Senior Jake Nichols set program and Centennial Conference records with 3,910 points in the heptathlon at last weekend's Bucknell Bison Open in Lewisburg, Pa.

He placed ninth overall with his best performances coming in the shot put (second place) and pole vault (fourth).

The rest of the Terror placed third out of five teams at the Hagerstown Invitational Saturday. Junior Jake Zamostny (South Carroll) led McDaniel by winning the 800-meter run and helping the team win the distance medley relay. Junior Steve Wetherhold took first in the shot put.

Women's indoor track

Sophomore Jasmine Scott won the 55- and 200-meter dashes to lead McDaniel to third place out of six teams at the Hagerstown Invitational Saturday.

Scott helped the Green Terror record 77 points overall. Sophomore Becky Kaler was victorious in the 3,000 run while McDaniel added four other top-three finishes.

Senior Katie Corson took second in the 200, junior Forest Fleischer (Winters Mill) placed third in the 1,000, sophomore Jasmine McCormick finished third in the high jump, and the Terror crossed second in the distance medley relay.

Sophomore Logan Yox (Liberty) and junior Scott Forrester were the only McDaniel wrestlers with two wins during a rough 1-2 week.

Yox won 8-2 at 149 pounds and Forrester earned a 4-3 victory at 184 for the Terror's only wins in a 34-6 loss at 22nd-ranked Centenary Sunday.

Both also won, while sophomore Mason Goretsas (North Carroll) and senior Brent Lowe recorded pins in McDaniel's 24-21 victory at Gettysburg last Wednesday. In between, the Terror (3-9) absorbed a 51-0 blanking against No. 23 Delaware Valley Thursday.
