Rec Sports: Emma Stapleton leads Carroll Gymnastics to success in Largo

Level 4 gymnast Emma Stapleton led another solid meet for the Carroll Gymnastics team at the Sportsplex Classic on Jan. 24-26 in Largo.

Stapleton secured the top spot in the all-around with a score of 35.750. She was first on floor with a 9.300, second on bars with an 8.850, third on vault with an 8.500, and third on beam with a 9.100.


Coached by Haley Zincon, Jess Barnes, and Lynzie Ritz, two other Level 4 gymnasts placed in the all-around. Layla Kaplan was third overall with a score of 35.225. Kaplan was second on both bars (8.850) and beam (9.200). Hannah Spurgeon was fourth with a 34.950. She won vault with an 8.700. In addition, Ella Fritz won her age division on vault with a score of 8.650.

The Level 3 team, coached by Kate Gardner, Hunter Broman, and Irina Koroleva, did equally well. Brooke Shaffer scored a 9.550 to win bars, and was fourth on beam with a 9.275. Katy Resh was third on floor with a 9.225 and Brooklyn Tyler was second on beam with a 9.350.


For the Level 6 team, coached by Kelsey Stewart, Cecilia Sifuentes earned a 35.850 to finish fourth in the all-around competition. She was second on floor (9.000) and fifth on vault (8.900). Other top finishers in Level 6 were: Emery Gesell, third on vault (8.900) and fourth on floor (8.850); Samantha Wood, second on vault (9.200); Olivia Kennedy, fifth on beam (9.225); Brooke Rill, third on bars (9.100); and Mary-Beth Vento, second on beam (9.250).

The Level 7 and Level 8 teams, coached by Wendy Bloom, John Perna, and Vladimir Korolev, had multiple top-five finishers. For Level 7, Rheda Funk was fifth on bars with an 8.700, and fourth on floor with a 9.050. Tara Martindale was fifth on bars with an 8.900, and Abby Wimmer was third on bars with an 8.275. For Level 8, Kyra Martindale finished second in the all-around competition with a score of 34.350. She was third on bars with an 8.550, second on beam with an 8.850, and fourth on floor with a 9.100. In addition, Hannah Shipton finished fourth on bars with a 9.100.
