Mount St. Mary’s Damian Chong Qui named Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week

Damian Chong Qui is making the most of Mount St. Mary’s herky-jerky men’s basketball season.

The Mountaineers junior guard earned Northeast Conference Player of the Week honors for the second time in as many weeks, becoming the first MSM player to earn back-to-back NEC Player of the Week awards since Junior Robinson during the 2017-18 season.

Chong Qui poured in a career-high 30 points in the Mount’s 65-64 loss at Central Connecticut State on Friday. He scored 22 of his 30 points in the second half to lead the Mount’s comeback attempt. Chong Qui netted seven consecutive points to give MSM a 52-51 lead to cap a 10-0 scoring run. He then hit a 3-pointer with 26 seconds to play to put the Mount on top, 64-62, before Central Connecticut won the game on a trey from Nigel Scantlebury with 4 seconds to play.

It was the Mount’s first 30-point game since Jalen Gibbs scored 30 against Wilson on Dec. 15, 2018.

In the Mount’s 67-57 win on Thursday, Chong Qui scored 17 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead the Mount to the come-from-behind win.

He shot 50% (14-of-28) from the field, 40% (4-for-10) from 3-point range, and 90% (18-of-20) at the foul line for the week.

Chong Qui has scored in double figures in each of the Mount’s seven NEC games, averaging 18.3 points and 5.7 assists in league play. He’s at 15.8 points (fifth in the conference, second on the Mount) and 5.1 assists (tied for second in the NEC, first on the team) per game this season.

Chong Qui earned all-NEC third-team honors as a sophomore, and named the conference’s Most Improved Player in 2020. He averaged 12.2 points and 3.9 assists last season, and posted 20 double-digit scoring games.

Mount St. Mary’s is 5-6, 4-3 in the NEC. The Mount played its first five games before pausing Dec. 10 because of positive COVID-19 tests within the program. MSM had three games canceled and two more postponed before it returned to the court Jan. 7.

Mount St. Mary’s returns to action this weekend with a two-game series with Sacred Heart on Jan. 30 and Jan. 31 at Knott Arena. Tip-off each day is set for 2 p.m.
