Women's Basketball: McDaniel set to name Gill Center court after longtime coach Becky Martin

Becky Martin stepped away from McDaniel College’s women’s basketball program in the summer after being diagnosed with cancer, but starting next month the longtime Green Terror coach will officially be around for a very long time.

The school unveiled Friday its plans to re-dedicate the basketball court inside Gill Center, and rename it Rebecca L. Martin Court.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place Jan. 19, 2019, at halftime of the women’s game between McDaniel and Dickinson, which tips off around 1 p.m.

Martin, 60, who was a multi-sport star at Westminster High School and then Western Maryland College, took over the reins of the women’s basketball program in 1981, just one year after graduating. She spent 37 seasons as McDaniel’s coach, and totaled 554 career wins.

The Green Terror have 15 Centennial Conference tournament appearances under Martin, with four conference championships and six NCAA tournament trips.

Martin is the winningest coach in Centennial Conference history.

After this past season, Martin said she suffered from an inflamed pancreas and couldn’t seem to shake the illness. It turned out to be something else — stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

Martin made her indefinite leave from McDaniel official in late August.

Rick Little, a former assistant under Martin, assumed interim coaching duties for the basketball team, which is 6-4 (2-4 Centennial).

Participants scheduled to attend the January ceremony include: Dr. Roger N. Casey, president of McDaniel College; Martin K.P. Hill, chair of the McDaniel Board of Trustees; and Toby McIntire, who played for Martin from 2000-04 and is the Green Terror’s all-time leader in assists (463).

The Centennial Conference doubleheader between McDaniel and Dickinson concludes with the men’s game around 3 p.m. McDaniel’s annual women’s basketball alumnae game precedes the action at 10:30 a.m.

All events are free and open to the public.

McDaniel alumnae and friends of the Green Terror women’s basketball program have established The Rebecca L. Martin Court Endowed Fund, which provides for the naming of the court used by the men’s and women’s basketball teams, volleyball team and wrestling team, as well as supports the annual maintenance of the hardwood floor.
