Carolyn Jamison received Most Valuable Player honors from UMBC’s women’s lacrosse team after last season.
This spring, the Westminster High School graduate earned some more prestigious accolades.
Jamison, a senior midfielder, was chosen as one of two Outstanding Athletes for this year by the Retrievers in early May. Jamison shared honors with Jairus Lyles, a member of the men’s basketball team who helped UMBC upset Virginia in the NCAA tournament back in March.
Jamison finished the season with 44 goals and 21 assists for 65 points, which led the Retrievers. She led UMBC (11-6) with 26 caused turnovers and 46 ground balls, and added 44 draw controls (third on the team).
Jamison ends her college career as one of the Retrievers’ most prominent players, ranking in the top five in program history with 217 points (second) off 156 goals (third) and 61 assists (third). She was named to the America East All-Conference first team in 2016 and 2017 while earning second-team honors this year.
Jamison was also named to the America East All-Tournament Team in 2015 and 2017.
Then came some regional accolades — Jamison earned a spot on the Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association. Jamison is the first Retriever to be named to the list in seven years.
Jamison is one of six recent UMBC players to earn an IWLCA All-Region honor. The IWLCA honored 128 Division I student-athletes with inclusion on one of the eight All-Region teams, with each of the four regions naming a first and second team.
Earlier this week, Jamison was selected to participate in the 2018 IWLCA Senior All-Star Game. Jamison is one of the 44 Division I seniors to participate in the annual exhibition, which takes place on June 2 at Tierney Field at US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks. Jamison will play for the South squad, coached by James Madison’s Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe.
Hertz so good for Shippensburg
Shippensburg junior defender Valerie Hertz (Liberty) landed on the 2018 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Lacrosse First Team, marking the second consecutive year that she has received the honor from the league’s coaches.
Hertz leads the PSAC and ranks third in Division II with 3.0 caused turnovers per game. Her 51 caused turnovers this season is a school record. She also ranked third in the PSAC and fourth in D-II with 4.47 ground balls per game. Her 76 ground balls ranks second in SU single-season history.
Hertz ranked eighth in the PSAC with 67 draw controls, a total that ranks third in SU single-season history.
Hertz completed her first season as a team captain by starting all 17 games for the Raiders. Through three seasons, Hertz has totaled 165 ground balls, 115 draw controls and 115 caused turnovers, all totals that rank among the top 5 all-time in school history.
Mack attack at Francis Marion
Francis Marion University junior shortstop CJ Mackinson (Century) was named to the Peach Belt Conference’s 2018 All-Conference second team. The Sykesville native led the Patriots in homers (six), doubles (14), OPS (.906), and slugging percentage (.506), while batting .320 and driving in 35 runs.
