Student recognized in Women of Tomorrow Awards Program

Payton Steele, a seventh-grade student at Shiloh Middle School, has been selected for honorable mention for Grades 7-8 in the 2015 Women of Tomorrow Awards Program sponsored by the Maryland Commission for Women.

The awards program recognizes young women who have demonstrated a commitment to leadership, community service and academic excellence.

Payton is enrolled in all honors classes at Shiloh Middle School and participates in the Gifted and Talented program. She is a member of the Northrop Grumman STEM — Science, Technology, Engineering and Math — Club.

She is first chair viola in the school orchestra and is the goalie for the North Carroll Rec Council Storm and M. Malik Stars field hockey teams.

She is a former Safety Patrol officer and now volunteers at her former elementary school where she helps in the art room and mentors the Safety Patrol.

Payton has participated in many community service projects with the Junior Ambassador team.

She has taken the lead in the Halloween Party for Clovers — the younger 4-Hers — brought the Healing Hugs project to Shiloh Middle School and adopted three families in need for the holidays.

She has volunteered for several organizations, from assisting at soup kitchens to participating in the Healing Hugs project.

Payton would like to become a pastry chef and plans to major in business in college so she can manage her own bakery.

She would then like to attend the Culinary Institute of America, study abroad and intern in the Disney Culinary Program.
