Carroll Community College and Human Services Programs of Carroll County are offering free income tax preparation assistance for residents as tax season looms.

Both organizations are qualified IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites that offer to prepare tax returns free of charge for qualified individuals.

VITA offers free assistance to those with low-to-moderate incomes, including people with disabilities and the elderly. Residents who made less than $52,000 in 2013 may qualify for the service.

Human Services has also partnered with PNC Bank to provide free debit cards for tax refunds and free check cashing.

Appointments with Human Services are available now through April 15. Appointments may be made 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on select Saturdays.

At Carroll Community College, returns will be prepared free of charge for qualified individuals by trained and certified students from Feb. 4 through April 12.
