Carroll unemployment rate drops for third straight month

Carroll County's unemployment rate has dropped for the third straight month, according to information from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

The county's unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in April down from 6.1 percent in March. The rate has dropped each month since January when it was 6.7 percent.

Jon Weetman, administrator of Carroll County's Economic Development department, said the county has been cautiously optimistic about the trend.

While Weetman cautioned not to get too depressed or excited over monthly unemployment figures, he said watching the number of people employed each month is more indicative of a positive trend.

The number of employed Carroll County residents has been steadily increasing since January when it was reported to be 89,554. The April report stated 90,395 county residents are employed.

"As long as that number continues to grow, we're on the right track," Weetman said.

Carroll County's unemployment rate for April ranked fourth lowest in the state behind Howard, Montgomery and Calvert counties. It was also lower than the state unemployment rate, 6.4 percent, and the national rate, 7.5 percent.

The county's unemployment rate in April 2012 was 5.8 percent.
