Grand Central Eatery offers place to relax, study and eat well

When I was in college, we were lucky to have a student center with vending machines that served up stale pre-made boxed sandwiches, off-brand sodas, candy bars that dated back to the beginning of mankind, and a gross coffee machine that dispensed some of the worst coffee I have ever tasted.

The student center had dingy, gray-tiled walls, an ugly dropped ceiling and horrible worn out floors.

Things have clearly changed in the nearly 30 years since I was in college.

The students and community surrounding the Community College of Baltimore County, Owings Mills campus have a much better option: the Grand Central Eatery in the Owings Mills Metro Centre on Grand Central Avenue.

Located in the building that houses the Owings Mills branch of the Baltimore County Public Library and the CCBC Owings Mills campus, the Grand Central Eatery is a beautiful, modern facility that boasts amazing, bold colors with comfy seating, work spaces, tables and Wi-Fi. It offers people a place to come, sit, chat and study.

The Grand Central Eatery serves Starbucks coffees. My personal favorite Starbucks drink is the white chocolate mocha — a rich, smooth, creamy blend of espresso, chocolate and cream.

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day. The Grand Central Eatery offers such wonderful breakfast options as black forest ham and Swiss on an English muffin; sausage, egg and cheese on an English muffin; a Southwestern burrito; and a fresh vegetable frittata. The eatery serves a variety of fresh bagels, breakfast bars, an assortment of muffins and pastries, and a variety of whole fruits.

Lunchtime offerings include pressed sandwiches, like the Sante Fe chicken and the tomato and fresh mozzarella; deluxe sandwiches, like the Italian club, the pesto portobello and the grilled eggplant; and classic sandwiches, like the Albacore tuna salad and the old-fashioned peanut butter and jelly — my ultimate favorite lunch. Yes, folks, at age 51 my favorite lunch is still a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

You can also get Smart Idea Boxes, which are grab-and-go options. These include the fruit and cheese, which has cheddar squares, baby brie, Gouda triangles, whole grain crackers, apple slices and grapes; and the free range egg, which has cheddar squares, grapes, apple slices, a multi-grain roll, and peanut butter-honey. Both are listed as healthy options.

Salads include a fruit and nut quinoa, a curry chicken grain salad, and a grilled chicken Caesar salad.

Soups are served fresh, and vary depending upon the day. They are hearty and served piping hot — just the thing on the cooler fall and winter days.

The desserts are truly amazing. They include biscotti; homemade cookies; brownies that come in salted caramel, French chocolate and peanut butter cup crunch; and, my favorite: cheesecake lollipops.

The Grand Central Eatery is at 10300 Grand Central Ave. in Owings Mills. It is open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
