Visiting Farmer Tom's Farm Fresh for summer produce

One of my favorite parts of summer is the fresh local produce. In my opinion, there is no better addition to a cookout than fresh corn on the cob. Thankfully, there is a very convenient and wonderful area farm where you can get corn, as well as an assortment of other produce.

Farmer Tom's Farm Fresh has a small farm stand directly behind The Ski Shoppe on Main Street. The larger, full-service farm store is at the farm itself, at 427 Cockeys Mill Road in Reisterstown. The small stand is set up from late spring until early fall and offers locally-grown corn on the cob, tomatoes, cantaloupes, asparagus, zucchini and a number of other fresh produce items. The farm store offers a larger selection of produce, as well as fresh meats. Farmer Tom's offers farm-fresh turkeys, pork products and beef products.

The Reynolds family purchased the farm in 1952. At that time, it was operated by Tom's father, Lloyd. In 1985, when Tom graduated from Penn State, he began farming full time, and has been carrying on the family tradition ever since.

I had the joy of having interacted with Lloyd on a number of occasions. Lloyd, like my own dad, was very active in the Reisterstown Jaycees. The farm has long raised its own live turkeys that people can order for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Nowadays, that ordering can be done online, and the order can be picked up at your designated date at the farm store.

In the late 70s, Lloyd, my dad, and several others were actively running a Jaycees project to serve the underprivileged in our community. The project involved serving Christmas dinner to about 100 children. Lloyd was a bit of a jokester. He offered to donate a turkey for the dinner. But when my dad and a couple of the other guys went to pick it up, he informed them they would have to catch it themselves. I have memories of my dad and three other grown men chasing a turkey all over that farm.

Farmer Tom's is a four-seasons farm. In the spring, it offers annual and perennial flowering plants, hanging baskets, vegetable plants and herbs, with strawberries and asparagus arriving in the later part of May. In the fall, Farmer Tom's offers fresh turkeys, apples, gourds, vegetables, pumpkins and other fall produce. In the winter, you can get fresh turkeys and hams for Christmas. And in the summer, Farmer Tom's offers sweet corn, peppers, squash, zucchini, melons, raspberries and more.

I have had Farmer Tom's turkeys for Christmas and Thanksgiving, and I can tell you that a fresher, juicier turkey you will not find. According to Farmer Tom's website, the turkeys they raise are "given twice the recommended space to grow, with fresh water, feed and air daily."

Farmer Tom's offers an online store, at which you can order amazingly fresh items like bacon, steaks, ground beef, roast beef, chicken breast, turkeys, hamburger patties and hot dogs.

Farmer Tom's does offer delivery but will only deliver within 30 minutes of the farm.

The farm also offers field trip opportunities for area schools, as well as a venue for events. Children get the chance to see a working farm, see and touch some of the animals, and experience a farm at its best.

Farmer Tom's Farm Fresh is at 427 Cockeys Mill Road in Reisterstown. It is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 1 to May 27; from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 28 to Labor Day; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Labor Day to Oct. 31; and it is closed from Dec. 1 to March 31. During its period of closure, online ordeers are still accepted.

I get excited in the spring when I see the farmer stand arrive behind The Ski Shoppe. It's my favorite stop on the way home from work to grab fresh corn and other vegetables for dinner.
