Two of the most frequent questions I am asked are, "How do you eat out and continue to lose weight?" and "How do you eat healthy while eating out?" These two questions relate to each other and in many ways are one in the same.

I love salads, so I try to start a meal with a salad or have a salad as a meal.

The salad bar at the Reisterstown Family Diner, at 11613 Reisterstown Road, is one of my favorite places for a salad. It is full of wonderful, fresh vegetables, chick peas, hard-boiled eggs, and other additions like potato salad and macaroni salad. Whether I am having a salad as my meal or as a part of the meal, it's always a good, healthy choice.

Most times a good portion of my meal comes home in a box for another meal. In fact, if the portion is large when served, I ask for a box immediately and cut what is on my plate in half and put it in the box to take home.

If I know that what I am ordering is large, like when I order the veal saltimbocca at J&P Pizza in Glyndon, I ask for a box at the time I order my meal.

I also find nothing wrong with ordering a bowl of soup and an appetizer as a meal. I do this frequently when we order from Kuki Chinese Restaurant, in Glyndon, getting a bowl of chicken noodle soup and an order of steamed dumplings as my meal.

At Mondo Pizza & Bar, in Reisterstown, I love to order a bowl of French onion soup and an order of fried calamari.

While it's not exactly the healthiest of choices, the French onion soup is always tasty and perfect for our cooler days, and the calamari is a smaller portion size then a meal.

Another appetizer I like to order is the bowl of homemade guacamole and fresh-baked tortilla chips at Mezcal Mexican Restaurant and Bar in Owings Mills

I look for how things are prepared, too. For instance, I really like the broiled crab cake at CJ's Crabhouse and Grill in Owings Mills. It's full of lump crab meat and can be served with or without bread or rolls. Grilled, broiled or baked food tends to be healthier for you then fried foods.

Also, I almost never order soda. The sugar and other chemicals used to make sodas are simply not good for our bodies. I usually order water with lemon, iced tea, lemonade or coffee. These are great alternatives to sugar- and chemical-laden sodas.

It's no secret that I love desserts, and here is how I handle that. I either order a box for my dessert, too — typically I have three or four bites of whatever decadent dessert I desire — or I split it with a friend.

The Snickers bar dessert at the Grill at Harryman House, in Reisterstown, will easily last me three to four days.

There is nothing wrong with asking for a box for your dessert as well as your meal.

This is how I remain a foodie, eat out and enjoy life, without over-indulging.
