Thumbs up: McDaniel College will soon be honoring two of its most notable figures with the unveiling of the McTeer-Zepp Plaza. It is named after Victor McTeer, a celebrated civil rights attorney, one of the college's first African-American graduates and a member of the college's board of trustees; and the late Dr. Ira Zepp, a human rights activist and professor emeritus of religious studies at McDaniel. The plaza features a granite fountain and seating area that will become a community gathering place in front of the Baker Memorial Chapel.

Thumbs up: Carroll County Public Library continues to evolve into more than just a place for books, as the North Carroll branch will begin offering passport application services starting Sept. 14. The library will accept passport applications on behalf of the Department of State, take photos and conduct passport interviews from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Lynn Wheeler, director of the Carroll County Public Library system said the inspiration for the program came from the success of a similar program in neighboring Howard County.

Thumbs up: Joan Orem has been a staple at Baugher's Restaurant in Westminster as she weaves though the dining area day after day, stopping at each of her tables to drop off food, a check or sometimes just a smile. Orem, 61, of Westminster, has been working at the restaurant six days a week for 47 years. Orem dropped out of school when she was 14 and started working at Baugher's full time to earn enough money to buy a car when she turned 16, which she accomplished, she said. After that, Orem never found a reason to leave Baugher's.

Thumbs up: Sherri-Le Bream, the former director of high schools for Carroll County Public Schools from 2006 to 2014 and a 39-year educator, is the newest member of Carroll Community College's Board of Trustees. Bream has been named Maryland High School Principal of the Year, Woman of the Year by the Carroll County Woman's Fair, and was recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education and Citigroup as Principal of a Leading Edge High School.
