Thumbs up: The Westminster High School football team got a lesson in more than just blocking and tackling while doing something more important than winning a game when the Owls recently participated in Operation Welcome Home. The program has been finding supporters of the armed forces to greet soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coast Guard service members returning overseas since March 2007. This is the second time under coach Matt Study that the Westminster team has participated. "We run our football program 365 days a year, but we want our players to understand that there is life outside of football, beyond their little bubble, so we also try to offer service opportunities to our team," Study told us. The team greeted more than 350 service members during the Jan. 26 trip to BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. Junior Cole Prodoehl said it felt great to do something for the troops. "The look on their faces ... there was nothing like it," Prodoehl told us. "It was awesome."
