Letter: Police support Dominick, Yingling for Westminster

I am writing to you as the President of the Carroll County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 20 which represents police officers from the Westminster City Police Department. Recently, the lodge invited candidates for Mayor and city council to a monthly meeting to hear their views, opinions, and goals for the Westminster City Police Department and the City of Westminster. Officers were also given the chance to ask questions and offer opinions and insight on the Westminster City Police Department. After the meeting, members from Police Department were given a chance to vote for who they would like to endorse, if anybody. The Carroll County Fraternal Order of Police would like to officially announce their endorsements for Joe Dominick, for Mayor of Westminster, and Ben Yingling, for city council.

Joe Dominic is a business owner on Main Street in Westminster and offers a new vision for the city and also an open mindset for policing in the city. As a resident of Westminster, and a graduate from McDaniel College he sees a lot of potential growth in the city. Ben Yingling is the Vice President at Crawford Yingling Insurance on Main Street in Westminster. He also sees where the City of Westminster is lacking in certain areas and brings business experience to help grow the city. The two of them have a lot of the same views and have the same opinions and stances on a lot of the topics city covernment makes decisions on.

Over the past several years the Westminster Police Department has had a difficult time recruiting and retaining officers. We feel that the currently seated city council and Mayor are not giving the chief of police the tools necessary to succeed. When officers have expressed opinions about issues to the council and Mayor, they have been told to leave if they don't like it. Officers have also been told that their jobs are no different than public works. Now I will agree that officers are no better than anybody else but their jobs are completely different and this is no way to help boost morale amongst your employees.

Please help us on Tuesday, May 9 support Joe Dominick for Mayor of Westminster and Ben Yingling for city council.

Brandon Holland
