Letter: Announcing candidacy for Westminster council

I, Ann Thomas Gilbert, am running for the Westminster City Council seat being vacated by Suzanne Albert. It is my belief that public service is a responsibility that we all share and we should all be willing to contribute our time and best effort toward the well being of the community in which we live, work, and play. Mohammed Ali said it well, "Service to others is the rent you pay on earth."

Having lived in the City of Westminster for 50 years, having raised two children on the street that I grew up on, and having worked for the Carroll County Department of Social Services for 18-plus years, I am aware of the needs of the community, the resources available and am aware of the public concerns that face our city.

My service to our community began 26 years ago when I worked with the PTO organizations at Friendship Valley Elementary School, West Middle School and Westminster High School serving as a parent booster. This taught me patience, cooperation, the importance of delegating work and the benefit of compromise. Additional community service includes having worked with Cub Scouts and Boy Scout Troop 381, belonging to Kiwanis from 2006-2013, serving as a board member for Seniors Keep in Touch, and serving on the Purse Auction Committee. I have also lead Cross Agency Trainings as a member of the Heath Care Leadership Team from 2009-2014, served on the Farm Museum Board of Governors from 2011-2015 and graduated from Leadership Carroll in 2012. I currently serve on the Healthy Aging Leadership Team.

My commitment is to serve the citizens of our great city and contribute to its growth and prosperity; I will support public safety, encourage the continued improvements of city infrastructure, support marketing efforts of the Broadband project and encourage new economic development while supporting our local business. I would like to work on improving communication between the city administration and the citizens of Westminster.

With respect, grace and humility I pledge to help the citizens of Westminster by promising to work wherever and whenever possible to keep Westminster the best city in Carroll County to live, work, learn and play. Please email me at if you have questions or comments. I look forward to hearing from you and remember to vote on May 9, 2017. Thank you.

Ann Gilbert
