Letter: Trump surging because of establishment failures

The four cartoons on your opinion page Sunday, May 15 — a flying pig, frozen hell, dog and cat wedding and Trump with an elephant trunk — brought a question to mind. Why is Donald Trump so popular?

Could it be that he is politically incorrect (therefore not a politician), not on a government payroll like the other 20-plus candidates running for the presidential office, but a self-contained successful business man, rich and therefore not vulnerable to lobbyists, bribes, extortion, blackmail, greed. But he can tell it the way he sees it.

The U.S. is not a happy place and not a pretty picture right now, thanks to the power brokers in the ancient Roman capital on the Potomac. The establishment hasn't established anything and their status quo is nothing to brag about. Trump is pointing to their failures, the lost wars on border protection, drugs, poverty, crime, terrorism and the international trade agreements they negotiated and signed that left our country a big loser vis-a-vis China, Europe, Japan, India, Mexico and even Canada (NAFTA).

All three branches of government have absolutely painted the tax-paying middle class into a corner and we are waiting for Trump to come with a blower.

Politicians and diapers should be changed often and for the same reason.
