First and foremost, help the children [Letter]

There has been much discussion about the recent influx of child refugees across our southern borders.

Let me just say that I totally support the creation of a sane immigration policy. We are not close to that now and we are reaping the consequences of laws from beginning more than a decade ago that our country is bound by.

Above and beyond that, I respect that the current influx is not totally illegal immigrants, but refugees. This kicks in a totally different set of laws. And they are mostly children.

Imagine yourself as a parent who has lost children to the drug cartels and is so desperate as to send their remaining child off with coyotes across terrain that kills ... only in hopes that their child will be safe. Imagine one of these little ones as your son or daughter (But for the grace of God).

Whether they stay or are returned, while they are here we must behave as adults and not retraumatize these kids who are looking for safety. We lecture and pressure other countries to care for thousands, if not millions, of refugees in other parts of the world.

The state has a website, http://www.dhr.state.md.us, that will give people an array of options if they would like to let their heart shine.
