Letter: Good people behind every flag flown

Editor:

In rebuttal to Carl Burdette'sletter, "Flag Victim of Liberal Ideology,"Mr. Burdette you omitted one word from youreditorial: slavery. Not all of us look through every issue, with wearing political spectacles or lens. The Civil War, in my eyes was fought for one reason: slavery. The South and even our little old state of Maryland fought to keep a "certain traditional way of life."A life where others — slaves —toiled in the fields and did their master's bidding, for free. No wages, no political pull to get a payincrease from nothing. Free labor built this country. Slave labor built America. Mr. Burdette why did you choose to leave the "original sin" outof your editorial?Politics, I guess is your reason, politics. As a black man, sure I get a certain raw feeling in the pit of my stomach, when I see the Confederate flag flying. Yet, people are people. I refuse to pass judgment, on any man, based onthe flag he chooses to fly. For myself, I try my best not to judge a book by its cover.

A true story: My cousin who looks like me — black — once told her story of beingstuck in the snow just outside of Westminster, winters ago. Two guys in a half-ton pick-up truck stopped to help her, push her out of the snow. My cousin was tickled pink to have hercar freed from the snow and ice. The two dudes thathelped push her car out had aConfederate flag in the back window of their pick-up truck. They were not liberals, progressives,Republicans or conservatives. They were two gentlemen helping out a woman in distress. This is Carroll County Mr. Burdette, we are still country folk here, we help one another out when needed.

Gov. Nikki Haley, of South Carolina, did a monumental thing in her state. She put politics aside and put her constituents feelings in the forefront. Mourning the A.M.E Nine, soulsno longer with us, brought this country together, for once. We are in this together, sometime politics has no place in a civil conversation, Mr. Burdette. Thank you.
