Committed to better schools [Letter]

With the primary election only weeks away, I am asking the citizens of this county to educate themselves on the board of education race and to cast your vote for those candidates who are directly involved in our schools.

My name is Devon Rothschild, candidate for the board of education, and as a parent volunteer, substitute teacher, active PTA member and committee member in the Carroll County Public Schools, I know first-hand what is working in our school system and what is not.

CCPS is doing some things incredibly well and we need to make sure we maintain these things. Our educators are dedicated, innovative and caring. There is a commitment to student success exhibited at all levels of our school system, including our superintendent, administrators, educators, support staff and parents. This is evident as CCPS has the highest graduation rate in the state, and our students are consistently named Maryland Scholars, AP Scholars, National Scholars and Merit Scholars. Our schools are awarded Blue Ribbon School status and our teachers, administrators and students continue to earn honors that are too many to list here.

However, I have also seen components of our school system that need improvement. I do not believe there is efficient communication between the Board of Education and parents and community members. Teachers need increased support, including competitive salaries and opportunities for additional professional development. We need to attend to our facility issues. It is not acceptable to walk into a classroom and see the roof leaking and disrupting instruction. Our students need better intervention and extension opportunities. We also need to address the implementation issues associated with Common Core. These improvements are critical to student success and they must be addressed.

I am committed to maintaining what is exceptional and improving what is not in our school system. I will be able to make the difficult decisions required of a board of education member because I am involved and informed about our school system. That is why I am asking that you allow me to be a voice for every student in the community. Please cast your vote for me on June 24.

On a personal note, I am not related to County Commissioner Richard Rothschild.

Devon Rothschild
