Our federal government has also remained strong, even under Trump’s appointees. For example, the setbacks in environmental regulations due to industry appointees running the EPA and the Interior Department, are temporary. While the Trump administration is allowing car manufacturers to decrease gas mileage for their vehicles, most car and truck manufacturers will continue to work to make their vehicles more efficient. The public demands these improvements and competition among manufacturers require it for financial survival. Also, many large states, such as California and New York, will hold the line on mileage requirements regardless of lax regulations at the federal level. Car manufacturers understand that Trump’s relaxation of air and water quality rules are temporary; they are unlikely to modify their factories just to have to modify them again for a new administration in 2020.
